1804 Large Cent Restrike; When were they struck?

    It is said that the Class III 1804 dollars were struck no earlier than 1857, so I'd guess the 1860 date for the cents may not be too far off the mark.

    The date of 1860 is from the recollections of three early Large Cent collectors named Doughty, McGirk and Rice. Mickley is presumed to have minted these coins from dies obtained from scrap and minted at an unknown location. Proskey thought it was minted at Philadelphia under supervision of US Mint officials, but that has never been confirmed. The first actual record of a sale was in 1868 when Edward Cogan sold an example at auction.

    There have always been those willing to manufacture products in an attempt to supply the wants and desires of collectors. One again, the Chinese are not the first to do this. But they are getting too good at it.
