Congrats! A half dime at 6" is not the easiest thing to find.

That's pretty amazing. Just out of curiosity, are they caked with dirt when you find them? I can't imagine they come out looking as amazing as that picture.

Silver comes outta the ground in great condition unless it was in watery ground. Then it has some black staining to it. The picture you see of the coin that has the dirt on it is how it came outta the ground. I learned not to wipe the dirt away on the silver coins because it can scratch em up pretty good. I keep em how they come outta the ground until I get home then I just rinse the dirt off under the faucet. What you see is from just a rinsing.

That is a great find! LOL, have to laugh a little at the dirt questions - sorry guys! It was 6 inches deep in the dirt, it didn't come out without a little dirt on it that would have to be removed in some fashion. The posts just gave me a little chuckle on a day when I needed one!

    Thanks

Once silver grows a "skin" it's pretty stable. Finding a coin like this doesn't surprise me -- it is my understanding that it's the water (and what it carries) that can really cause pitting/deterioration (as Jimmie posted a few posts above).

Well, it surprises me. Most of the coins I've seen posted that come out of the ground look a lot worse than that. That is a terrific specimen, for any example, and a great strike.

You could never find a coin like that in this area (SE Texas). There's just too much water in the soil. Now East Texas is a totally different situation.

Well I also think part of it is our great Michigan soil. The Indian heads and other coins made like them such as the 2 centers come outta the ground in great condition here. They are green but hardly any pitting. I have posted on metal detecting forums for years and most other states the coins just don't hold up to well. Silver usually comes outta the ground as dropped though in most states.
Another factor is that I hunt mainly old home sites. Most park finds are usually in pretty rough shape due to fertilizers and dog and geese poop and pee over the years. Most my old home finds are in great condition.
