Has this ever happend to any of ya'll ?

I've had it happen a couple times on the 'bay over the past decaded or so, and always immediately cancel my bids upon notification..... Essentially it exposed your bid to everyone and then anyone could shill the bid right up to your high bid..... I don't likey likey and wish to cancel this HA bid.... can I do that easily ?,, never done it 'fore.
btw,,, I like how they congratulate me..... "hey, now that everyone who was looking know's what you bid, congratulations !".. lol.

Anyway,, just curious how the forum members handled this event... I'm off to HA to cancel this bid. (if i can figure out how)

Congratulations, your bid of $269 has been reinstated and you are now the high bidder.
(Although rare, this can occur when a higher bid is voided)
Your secret maximum bid: $269 ($309.35 with BP)
Current bid: $130 ($149.50 with BP)
    Reserve Status: No Reserve

    Internet Bidding Ends:Oct 30 2010 8:00AM
Followed by the live auction on October 30, 2010.

Never happened to me as far as I know -- I tend to "fire and forget" when it comes to bidding at auction.

Have you really been harmed? When you bid you were willing to spend as much as $309.35. The worst thing that can happen is you spend the full $309.35 for the item (if you get shilled). Otherwise you either get the item for less or someone else gets it at a higher price than you were willing to pay.

Well heck yeah, easy answer.... I consider getting shilled being harmed,,, regardless of how much I was willing to pay.

I am also confused as to why you think there is now a problem. You were willing to spend $309.35. Now, you might have to spend $309.35 - AND you might not get it for $149.50. Even if there is what you call "shill bidding" (it is not), you cannot be forced to pay any more than you were willing to pay.

I had a bid on a 0.25 cent fractional currency note my max bid was $15.50 someone won for $15.50 & it was not me.... weird

Whether or not you get bid up to your max (or above?), you have ZERO evidence that anyone has shill bid.

Well if I had to pay 309 and I knew the price got there honestly, then I'd have no problem. The problem I have now is that when someone bids over my max bid it will expose my bid to everyone, and once they retract thier bid (which is what has happened), then there exists the opportunity for anyone to go ahead and bid 309.34 and push me to the maximum i was willing to pay.... that is a problem imo. What would you prefer, paying 150 for a coin you'd pay 350 for,, or paying 350 for the coin ?
I'm not saying it will happen,, but I am saying it "could" happen, and it's always been my practice to remove my bids from any auction in which my max bid was exposed to the bidding population.....
    Now, back to the question:
    Q - how do I retract a bid on HA ? ; )

It does open the door for shill bidding up to your 309 amount. I would be annoyed but there isn't anything you can do at this point.
Assuming it wasn't done on purpose the real question is if anyone else was paying that close of attention with this much time to go in the auction. It probably won't make a difference, the item will probably sell for way over the 309 amount. I don't even know the item, just guessing based on how much Heritage items can go up over the last couple days.

Could? Yep. Would? I will give you odds that no one will do it. However, without even knowing what you bid on, I would also give you odds that if you win (unlikely), it will be at your max bid. If you have been outbid with 3 days to go, I would bet you will again be outbid.

As to retracting a bid, cave_troll or swhuck will probably have to answer that.

Dang,, that's odd that they don't offer any guidance on how to retract a bid on thier site,, at least none that I could find after searching thier site map a few times.... Anyway, I've sent them a couple notes requesting that they cancel my bid on this auction, providing my reasoning, and stating that did not wish to honor my current max bid.....
then googled "heritage auction bid retraction" and found a thread on it in another coin forum in which they said that HA would generally cancel your bid if you called them and explained...
Guess I'll give them a day or so to respond to my on-line query, and then call if no joy from there... will let ya'll know how it goes.

after resolution, will also let you know which item it was if you'd like to know... it is a cent, lol.... one I've been softly looking at upgrading from my current 60... ;)

I see the problem. Canceling your bid is the solution. Others simply ignore the concept of a second LEGITIMATE bidder setting the floor for your bid rather than a traditional bid where the bid amount is always the selling price. This is what you bargained for. Placing a high bid and then withdrawing allows the system to be gamed to extract your maximum bid without the legitimacy of the second bidder setting the floor.

I don't like it when that happens either, especially on high dollar items. I have contacted one auction house and told them that if it happens again in the future, I will not be bound by my bid in that lot.

What if you get outbid on a coin, so you use the money to buy something else? And then later, you learn that you are high bidder again? That's not fair.

If you need to retract a bid with a non-Ebay auction house, it is best to call them and ask them to do so. There is no guaranteer that they will oblige, but they are generally OK with it, if it is far enough in advance of the sale date and kept to a minimum.

I see the mods changed the thread title to something less offensive than the original title.

Yes,, they are good folks, and I am sorry for the original title,,,,,
However, in all honesty, the rude and offensive title is both Duke's & RLM's fault... the combination of Duke's unwaivering ability to nail down tpg grades from pics, and RLM's increasing difficult samples have finally driven me to drink... and I must confess that I may have had one or two prior to tapping out the original title of this post.... ; )

    BTW:
    Resolution:
Thank you for your inquiry and let me be the first to apologize for this mistake. We erroneously placed a bid on lot 8739 for another client which was intended for a different lot in the auction. We therefore had to remove that bid which made you the current high bid, but also exposed your secret maximum to those following this lot. I have removed your bid so you will no longer be responsible for any previous bids you placed on this lot. All mistakes have now been corrected. If you have any further questions or concerns, always feel free to contact me directly at the information below, again I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

The Heritage guys are really a class act. This reply came within a day after my email... they will retain me as a customer. Outstanding customer service on this one !
You can check out the lot if you'd like,, it's a 12S cent,, and as has been stated already,, will likely exceed my max bid readily.... which is another reason I like this response from HA that much more as they are likely to know this also and know that thier actions in the bid removal will very likely have not affected the eventual outcome. They've been so professional that I almost feel like placing another higher bid.... and may ; )

So I gotta ask, are you still gonna bid on it? If so, how much?

    Just curious...Mike

I saw that one the other day and wondered why the bid was so low. Still lots of time not to be so low.

BTW, you need to learn how to accept responsibility for your own actions.

haha,, dunno really. It's a date that I'm softly looking to update,, I really like my 60 alot. The color and tone of this one was what attracted me to it and prompted my bid. There are a couple others in the same auction that I'll be looking to get more aggressively.... If I do bid again, it will be during the live session, and will be a function of how much the other lots have risen to, and also where this one is at that time.....
