It's a Jungle out there- Later Date Large Cent Counterfeits!

    The most telling is the date is in the wrong location relative to the bust; also the denticles look very strange.

    But honestly, if I just happened across this coin at random it would have fooled me.

    A friend posted this example bought from "an older gentleman who had them for years"!

    Notice some of the "points of interest" on it as documented in my Coin Week article; these just keep ticking...

    Yikes, how many years, I wonder? How long have these counterfeiters been at it?

    Thanks again Jack. I don’t buy a lot of late date large cents. But not something I’d expect counterfeits in either. I know that underdogted o is something I won’t forget

    Thanks for such an informative writeup. Sadly my unslabbed large cent days are long over. I've been hoping to get a nice unc one but they've shot up in price so much lately.

    On the 1842, I'd beconcerned about the lumps just above the 1st star, the the left of Ms. Liberty. The rim at the 12:00 and 3:00 positions also doesn't look consistent with the quality of the coin.
