In all honesty; I was hoping that it was still active... The 1772 Maria Theresa thaler is an elusive one... The other one that is proving to be elusive in referrences is the 1735 Charles 1/4 thaler from Austro-Hungary.
IQuestion- real or fake Hello, I have a question and I would be grateful if somebody could help me. I would like to know if this coin is fake? Thank you in advance
what are the letters under the Double Headed Eagle's tail; also, are there dots in front of the "X" and behind the "X" after the date? If there are how many and where? The coin you have is probably the most reproduced coins ever, and depending on the marks, you could possibly tell where and when it was reproduced.
Sorry, it's been some time since I looked at the coin. What you have is a reproduction! The letters that are under the bust of Maria Theresa (SF), tell it all! Tell me about the placement of the dots next to "S", "F" and the "X" and I will tell you when and where it was minted. Vlad
on which side of the letter? also, did you look up the link? Any letters under the tail of the eagle, what does the brooch look like there are 2 variants, what about the tail of the eagle? take a look at the link, if it doesn't help I have some other resources...
The full writing as follows: BURG.CO.TYR.1780.X ARCGID.AVST.DUX. Bellow the bust are placed two letters S.F.- dots are in the middle. There is one dot in front of the X and it's placed also in the middle. I'm unable to notice anything under the eagle's tale
based on your reply this is what I am comming up with:
(e) 1-3-1 tail feathers 4 49a-c,50a-b,51, 52,53a,54, 55,57, 58,60,61a-b,62,67a-b,69, 70 C mostly Vienna; few in Birmingham, Brussels, Paris, Rome 1853-today 1-2-1 tail feathers 4 63, 64,65, 66 1 London, Bombay, Calkutta, Birmingham 1936-61
That is something very interesting; even, 1/4 taller would weigh more then that... Are you sure the weight is correct?
I had one but mine was minted in 1964 and it really was silver, I sold it for a good price too. In this hobby I think everyone has unexpectedly bought a fake and if not then they at least paid way too much for at least one coin. I know when I first started collecting coins I was buying everything in sight within reason.
The 1780 Maria Thereza in the 2nd set of images is a restrike coin which was minted in Vienna, Birmingham, Brussels, Paris or Rome in 1853 to present. http://www.theresia.name/en/svariants.html I personally would much rather prefer the original strike MT thalers pre 1780.
