taking a guess... some real of ferdinand and isabella. the obverse legend, in part, says king and queen of castille. the reverse says ferdinand and isabella, by the grace of god. i've seen that obverse on a 4 real of f&i, but the legend surrounding it was more abbreviated.
It's from the Netherlands, but I'm having a brain cramp and can't recall for the life of me what the denomination is right now
Hmmmm - I was thinking all of the bundled arrows designs were from the Netherlands, but apparently not. But those used in the Netherlands were countermarked, so that must be what I was thinking of. Pretty sure this one is a 2 reale, based on the reported size, struck at the Toledo mint in the 1570's. Can't pin it down any better than that.
i think you're wrong. the 1570's would make it a carlos and johanna reale, but the legend doesn't say carlos and johanna. it says ferdinand and isabella. i think i got this one right, just not the right denomination.
That was an ooops on my part - hit the 5 instead of the 4. I was guessing an dgoing from memory regarding the date. If it's the size of quarter, it pretty much has to be a 2 reale.
The pictures in Cayon, are 23-29mm for 1 Real and 26-32mm for 2 Reales. They may not be actual size? but later coins are. The pictures also show 'II' opposite the Mintmark for the 2 Reales.
