Not quite, dont always believe what you see...there is two good things about greattoning. His inventory is always insane!!!And his customer service is great! With that said I have purchased 20 plus coins from him so I know exactly what I am getting and take that into consideration when bidding

Don't have any problem disagreeing with me now though do ya ? Nor should you. First of all a high post count means nothing, you know that, you always did know that. Even before you came here. Secondly a title means nothing, not when it comes to determining whether or not a person is knowledgeable, nor should it. So anyone who follows the line of thinking that you mention - they are the one with the problem - not me. For they are making inaccurate assumptions.

That is your personal choice, it is also your personal opinion. But I can remember when he first joined the NGC forum and started posting there. He did not strike me at the time as one with any experience to speak of, nor was I ever impressed with his knowledge. I'm still not. But I'll give him credit for posting pics of a lot of pretty coins.

People have to be careful about who they give credit to based on postings in coin forums. That's because it's all too easy to fool people on forums into thinking you know more than you really do. All too often some forum members will start to call this member or that member or that member an expert. It's like the use of the word rare - people call coins rare that are no more rare than grass that is green.

And that especially includes me. I have been called an expert hundreds of times, not just here, but on the NGC forum and the PCGS forum too. And quite a few forums that don't even exist anymore. But I am no expert in anything to do with coins ! And I have repeatedly said that. And anyone who thinks "they" are an expert, needs to actually meet somebody who really is. It's a very humbling experience.

And just because a TPG says a coin is MSXX - doesn't make it so either ;) And that is plainly evidenced by all of the coins they have upgraded, downgraded, bodybagged and then graded, or graded and then boddy-bagged, and so on.

And lets not forget Paul that only about 4 years ago it was pretty unusual for me to disagree with a TPG. It was also pretty unusual for them to disagree with me. What I mean by that is that I would grade a raw coin and the TPG pretty much always agreed with my grade. Neither of those comments is any longer true. Strange thing is - my grading standards have not changed one bit. You figure out what that means.

Well, I, for one, AM very impressed with Shane's knowledge. That is based on his posts (which are almost always spot-on), as well as the coins he handles.

I felt it necessary to establish a reputation as a knowledgeable collector on this forum before I started to disagree with you. Now that I have done that, I don't hesitate to disagree with you when our opinions diverge. However, you must recognize that a high post count in combination with an administrator title and your direct posting style gives every newbie the perception that you are the expert. And despite your occasional proclomation to the contrary, perception is reality, and you are perceived as an expert my most of the members of this forum.

I don't know about Shane's start on the forums. What I do know is that he buys/sells hundreds of thousands of dollars of toned coins per year and is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the toned coin market. It is his niche and he has learned from the very best over the years. If you are not impressed with his knowledge on the subject then I submit that you are allowing extraneous factors to cloud your judgement. And while I appreciate your warning about forum experts, and for the most part I agree, I rely on my poker reading skills to make judgments about online forum posters. In Shane's case, my read is that he is the real deal in regards to the toned coin market.

I really don't want to get into another discussion about TPG grading standards with you. At this point I will simply agree to disagree on that topic.

p.s. I like Shane, I really do, but let's be real about experience level. Shane's no expert, or I'm William Sheldon. Shane is a relatively new collector who has branched out to selling low-end toners on eBay in the past, what, two years? I remember meeting him at FUN 2007. While I will not reveal the topic of our discussion (I remember it well), it was pretty evident at the time he was just learning the ropes (as was I). That's taking nothing away from him or his experience/skill, or the quality of his posts, but rather simply suggesting that there's more than a bit of truth in GDJMSP's post:

"People have to be careful about who they give credit to based on postings in coin forums. Knowledgeable? Yes
A good and honest and fair guy? I believe so.
Expert? Not by my definition of the word.

    Respectfully...Mike

Don't take my word for it, it came straight from the horses mouth (see below). I have seen his E-Bay auctions, I believe it!

I'm not focused nearly as much on how long Shane has been at it or how much he has sold recently. His posts on toners, along with their individual characteristics, patterns and price levels, as well as his offerings, strike me as coming from a person who really knows his stuff.

And I don't throw such praise around frequently. In fact, I hope he doesn't read this. :D

In all fairness, I never annointed him an expert. But when someone emerses themselves completely in something the way Shane has in the toned coin market, it doesn't take them years to learn the ins and outs. All I said was that he was extremely knowledgeable about the toned coin market. Expertise is relative. I rank Shane as one of the most knowlegeable toning guys on this forum. And if someone on this forum had a question about a toned coin, I would have no reservation pointing them in Shane's direction for the answer.

Wow, what a total lack of respect.............Nobody should wonder "where the experts went" after reading this thread

    Mark,

He is subscribed to the thread. I think there is very little chance he won't see it. However, I don't think you should be shy with your compliments. I would find those words from a well respected dealer such as yourself very flattering.

Anyone who saw Shane's contributions to the TCCS forum in the year prior to it's demise would not question his knowledge on the subject. Unfortunately, it was like a private club on that forum with a few core members and some more casual posters like myself.

Me neither, and I would also add you to that list. :)

That said, I don't think any of us are experts, relative to the numismatic population in general.

To use an analogy, you can be a big fish in a small pond and yet still be a small fish in the ocean.

    Sincerely, A guppy. :)

Thanks for pointing that out -- I somehow missed the $300k number.

I have also been watching his auctions, and his progression through the hobby... How long has he been doing $300k/year on eBay? One? Two? Ten?

Regardless, I think you (and Mr. Feld, quoted below), bring up a good point:

I was kidding about hoping he wouldn't see my post, but had initially forgotten to include an emoticon. Sorry about that.

Please don't take this as a knock on Shane,, I do believe he is light years ahead of most on the forum in understanding the toning market and coin toning physics/chemistry/etc....
However, putting the dollar value of toners sold on your resume doesn't make you an expert imo.... it makes you a businessman and marketer.. how good depends upon how much you paid for the product before you sold it. I bet there are thousands of car salesmen out there who've sold Millions of dollars worth of cars, but would have a hard time changing the oil in a car... they know the market, they are good salesmen,, they are not experts in cars, they are experts in the sales of cars.
Again, not a knock of Shane, as i do believe he knows the coins also,,, I just don't like the analogy of sales = expertise.

Allow me to put in lay person terms. Handling $300K of toned merchandise means that he has seen them blue, green, grey, purple, pink, brown, black, orange, gold, aqua, aqua and orange, purple and red, pink and blue, brown and black, black and purple, orange and red, aqua and pink, pink and black, purple and pink, green and brown, red purple and aqua, black brown and red, green blue and orange, yellow pink and green, red orange brown and black, purple green red and orange, Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Barber Halves, Walking Liberty Halves, Kennedy 90%ers, Kennedy 40%ers, Barber Quarters, SLQ, Washington Quarters, Barber Dimes, Mercury Dimes, Roosevelt Dimes, Wheat Back pennys, Memorial Pennys. Canada Dollars, Canada Half Dollars, Canada Quarters, Canada Dimes, Canada 1C, Double Mint sets Galore, I think you get the point by now:rolleyes:

Also I would be interested in reading a thread about changing the oil on a toner if you would so incline.:thumb:

I have been following this thread for a few days now. My only comment is that this use to be friendly forum for all but the tone of this forum has changed in the last year or so.
