My response was honest. Yours was downright rude. If you think my contribution to this forum is one of an elitist who complains about newbie questions, then you have not been paying attention for the last two years.

So clarify something for Us.....Are these "poor investors" into the older silver for the bullion value, and care not about any numismatic value? Are the "junkies" really hijacking these boards? You tell me....Idk.....I`m usually in the bullion forums with some of the more intelligent investors who collect bullion. Maybe We owe You an apology for driving them into Your neck of the woods. : )

I've been here since January (I think lol) and I apologize if I have posted any questions that have been asked a bazillion times. I run searches but still have a hard time getting the things I want to show up. I appreciate anyone in this field who has more knowledge than me and is willing to share it. We all need to respect those who are more knowledgable than us, even if they sometimes say what we don't want to hear. It comes down to the basic respect your elders thing. I am still a newbie (relatively, six years running) at this hobby and I am here to learn as much as possible and to help others learn as well. While I am nowhere near an expert, I hope to be someday. So thank you to all those "experts" who have helped me along the way so far.
    Sincerely,
    Tyler

"Expert" is something that is eventually earned, and not self acclaimed. The earning of respect for the knowledge that a person has accumulated doesn't happen over night or sometimes never. To be an expert a person has to be able to separate the proven from hearsay, able to validate his opinion, and if his opinion is not received by others, reevaluate himself and his opinion.

On any forum or other public discussion, there will be those who are not use to being contradicted in public ( even though mainly anonymous), and feel they must retort with rancor to save face. These are people to avoid as nothing positive happens in conversations with them, and to drop to their level by continuing arguments will serve no good purpose. However,I do believe that these leopards can change their spots over a period of time, they are just used to being the center of their universe in their mind, and reality can bite hard at times.

There are very knowledgeable and considerate people on this forum, but some members have never seen a thread they didn't feel they had to comment, whether they know anything about it or not, and this tends to cause many who could contribute to pass on to another. The majority of the experts still seem to be here, just they are more selective in what threads they participate. All in my opinion.

I believe the reasons many don't post any longer are evident by the responses to this thread.

That is why your answer to this question surprised me - you came across just like mbt used to. You are the one that said "most posts" and "most coins" are dreck - not me. I still read way more posts than I respond to - it has always been that way on this forum. I still like this site just the way it is. People come and go all the time - still a lot of one time posters finding out about fake coins, lots of new collectors who like to judge how they are doing, etc. It has always been this way and probably always will be. And no I am not arguing - expressing my opinion off the original post. Again - sorry you felt it was rude, but your original post could have been worded differently.

Lehigh has some valid points. I have to admit, there's more than a few threads that I don't even read anymore. It's a matter of interest for me. If the title of the thread doesn't grab my interest then I don't read it. I don't care whether it's about something expensive or something that cost 50 cents - it just has to interest me. Or, be a question that I think I can answer.

desertgem has valid points too. Sometimes folks just get tired of responding because they know somebody is going to argue about it - and they don't want to argue. They already know what is right and what is wrong and are only trying to help. So when somebody argues about it all the time, then why bother ?

These things are true - they happen. It's human nature and it should be expected to happen. Forums are live things, they take on a life of their own based upon the members who make up that forum - all of them, not just some. And just like only a few members can make a forum a very good thing, only a few can make it a not so good thing.

But just like in life, we all have to take the good with the bad. The only real question is - are you willing to do so ?

Do I get a pat on the back then for reading this entire thread?

Hint: Experts do not answer questions with out prior knowledge of the subject...BS'ers on the other hand can and do know the answer to every question ever proposed.

How do you know an expert? Most of the posters have usernames. I don't. Did you bother to go to the ANS Library page and look for "Marotta, Michael"?

Did you listen to the recent COIN RADIO program where "Doug Prather" talked about ducats? He posts here often, but under a different name.

    Expert at what?
Numismatics encompasses a broad array of materials. I learn from being here, too. If you want me to answer, you have to ask me something I know.

    How do you measure responses?

It happens that people ask questions for which others have no answers. Random chance says that there will be bursts and runs with unanswered queries. It is not always wilfull refusal.

The growth of CoinTalk is another factor, positive in many ways, but the fact is that many more people are here in chat mode and they respond to posts off the top of their heads just to say something. It is not pernicious; it's just being sociable.

Why do I owe you anything?

I drew the line years ago at people who asked to identify foreign coins for which they made no efforts. Rzeczpospolita Polska and Československo and all the rest, every alphabet in the world is online. You look at the pictures, you fill in the blanks, and you learn.

If you cannot make an effort, I refuse to make it for you. If I find the challenge interesting, I will do the work for myself -- I benefit first -- and then share the answer to thank the questioner for helping me learn more. But not everyone says "Thank you" for the answer and that is the only payment we get here.

First MM I want to thank you for the time you have spent answering questions here.......

Even the the ones I have not asked.:smile

Few grasp who is who here and THAT CAN be a good thing.

Since not everyone is a "writer" & I am just barely a Reader I must admit the give & take of info exchange in these modern times is ubiquitous and therefore sometimes confusing to other cultures.

As we used to say in the lab~

    "Some Do. Some Don't."

But the banter is thought provoking and the intent can be rewarding......or not.

Keep up the good work. :hail: & Publish on.
