That would be my thinking, but I am curious which way Doug thinks. Neither is really "wrong" - AND it is very pertinent the meaning of his comments.
My thinking is no different than yours. When I talk about premium I mean the extra it cost to purchase the gorgeously toned example as compared to one like it that had no toning or ordinary toning. The price range is immaterial. All that matters is if you pay 10, 20, 30 or more times what the same coin would ordinarily cost.
The title comes with a different level of responsibility....so when you make statments that folks are flushing their money buying these high priced toners...that is very irresponsible of you. New collectors on these forums don't know you have no qualifications to even remotely back up your opinions that folks are indeed wasting money on these coins......your right I don't like but this is not the first time I have encountered this type of message being spread on coin forums so I will just ignore what has no merrit and continue my quest to truly enlighten this newer collectors as to the true dangers facing them in the world of coins.
Hi Shane, Happy Saturday, and thanks for your response.... There is a difference between tact and bias. I'm sure you understand the difference. You are biased and tactful. Others are biased and (relatively) less tactful. But we are all, to some extent, biased by our own experiences and opinions. One difference, however, is that you are making at least part of your living off these coins, and that introduces a bias that those reading and not aware may be interested in -- and that was the point of my original post. So while I believe you are fair and tactful in your comments here and elsewhere (and to your credit!), to suggest that you are not biased would be inaccurate, and there's a big difference between bias and tact IMO. Take care....Mike p.s. everyone's opinion "has merit", and who are you (or any of us) to suggest otherwise?
First off, I didn't ask for the title, it was assigned to me. Didn't even have any say in the title, and have asked for the title to be removed on numerous occasions. So forget about the title and what you think it means. On the contrary, it would be irresponsible of me to not state my opinion when I believe it to be true. You're absolutely right - you do not know. You have absolutely no idea what my qualifications are or what they are not. But there are plenty of people who do. And they have come to know what my qualifications are from years of experience with me. Something you do not have. And any trust, any respect, any admiration that I may have, I have earned. And I never said they were wasting their money - I said it was foolish.
I wont lie, Shane is 100% right. My experience here have taught me that Doug likes to bag on toning collectors. Doug enjoys making Paul mad by downgrading his Jeffersons. He says my Roosevelts are quote "uglier than sin" and quote " You couldn't give me the coins for free." So my advice is to just drop and and dont allow him to get a rise out of you anymore. People on here know how he is. He dont activley collect anymore so he gets a rise out of downgrading everything knowing darn well that he wont be posting coins of his own for us to downgrade.
My 2 cents Raw toned coin I say buyer beware & would not buy one. but graded toned coin Anacs,Icg, Ngc and Pcgs. some folk's will spend more money for them. I love a nice toned coin but surly won't spend $3k unless a very nice 1893-95-P-O-S or 1900-1904-P-O-S key date
I don't recall Doug ever criticizing my Jefferson collection. If anything, he criticizes the grading standards employed by the TPG's. Doug simply has different opinions than most collectors including myself. And although I may not agree with him on many occasions, I do respect his opinions and usually understand his point of view. I think that Shane's point is that because of Doug's title and post count on this forum, many of the newbies will automatically assume that he is an expert and they will automatically lend more weight to his opinion. When I first joined this forum, I felt exactly the same way. Disagreeing with Doug was almost sacrilegious. I tend to lend weight to the opinions of those who I consider specialists in a particular area. There is nobody on this forum with more experience in the toned coin market than Shane, including myself. On the subject of toned coins, I would defer to Shane's judgement most of the time.
While we're on the subject of premiums for toned coins, here is a beautiful NGC MS65 star, common date Morgan up for sale on Ebay. With about four hours to go it is bid $305, or roughly 2 1/2 times the price of a generic example.
I didnt know you were greattoning.....We have delt plenty of times before. Matter of fact you might remember I called you about a month ago about consigning some of the coins that didnt make the grade from NGC
I expect more from you Paul, calling your MS65 jefferson nickels AU55 is definitely bagging. But if you have no problem with that than I guess I shouldn't have one.
Mark is not Greattoning. I think the example that Mark posted will sell for around $500 when all of the sniping is done. This is exactly what I was referring to, he has a problem with the current grading standards employed by the TPG's. Doug is easily a full grade more conservative than both NGC and PCGS and makes no allowances for wear no matter what. I don't think he intentionally picks on my Jeffersons or your Roosevelts, he is equally as strict with any coin that he grades. But just because Doug calls a TPG MS coin AU, doesn't make it so!
As Paul mentioned, I am not Greattoning. I would not post my own coin if it were currently up for sale on Ebay. And I agree with his estimate of $500 on the coin I posted.
We might as well link the E-Bay auction so we can track it easier. http://cgi.ebay.com/1881-s-NGC-MS65-Star-Gem-Rainbow-Toned-Morgan-Dollar-/370443840263?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item56402c6b07#ht_5963wt_1141
I really like the way the seller calls out the type of lighting this coin is pictured under.... it appears darker even under what I'd call the most extreme light (sunlight).. Pretty coin, and whoever the seller is, I like him/her....he's one up in the toner seller department imo....
for what's it worth... I posted 4 cents on the forum some time back and asked for opinions regarding how'd they do at TPG's if submitted. (1909svdb, 1913, 1916, and 1931d).. Dougs reply was: 09svdb - poo-poo, probably won't grade 13 - as above 16 - as above 31d - as above .... lol. He nailed two of them,,, I should have reviewed the lot closer before wasting half my money on the submissions to pcgs.
09s vdb came back VF25 and the 31D came back ms64 brn. The pics were poor,, I've gotten better since then. 13 and 16 got busted for questionable color.... They all looked o.k. to me,, but as I said, it would have been worth a bit of extra time posting additional pics and soliciting more comment in an effort to get together a batch that had a better hit rate at grading.... I'll double click Doug again the next time I submit, as well as others in the forum... lesson learned.
