5 Mark below melt is definitely a good deal. Funny you mention it, I recently picked up three 2 RM coins for $8 - also below melt. Lack of knowledge I guess...

    Nice grade 3 Mark

Heh, thanks. I think when I bought the 1934-A 5 mark, silver was around $12 bucks an ounce, and I ended up paying $3.00, for .4016 oz ASW ... not bad at all.
Sounds like an equally nice pickup of yours.
Yeah that 1913 3 mark is definitely one of my favorite German coins. I love that style of bust of the Kaiser. Kaiser is a translation of Caesar by the way, if I'm not mistaken... I think Czar is as well...

There are two varieties of those, so to say. The earlier type shows the eagle with just the wreath and the swastika simply removed from the die. Those are 1 Reichspfennig 1944D pieces, and they are rare and costly.

The later type, issued in the last years of the German Empire (allied occupation 1945-48), comes in three denominations (1, 5, and 10 Rpf). Same design and composition as the nazi coins, but the wreath/swastika has been replaced by a tail. They are not terribly expensive ...

I found a few such coins from WWII and was initially repulsed, but I keep them away from my other coins.

I suppose I'll do the same if I ever get some old Roman coins.

I mean, What have the Romans ever done for YOU?

I disagree on that point about wars after WWII being fought for "better" reasons. War is never "civilized." But let's all stay on the topic of coins/banknotes, whatever, instead of war discussions. Not the place.

  12. Its a "woodie" nickel. :)

I think he meant that USA fought in WWII for better reasons (killing Nazis, liberating parts of EU from them), as opposed to other wars after 1945 in which USA took part or initiated. If that is the point, i agree, defeating Nazi Germany is a good reason to get into a war, even if you`re not attacked directly by them.

It is a "World War" thread, did you really expect to talk much about coins? :)

If that's what was meant, I agree as well. Haha definitely naive of me to think it would stay on topic, you're right. But I hope it does, it would be interesting to see a thread that is kind of "stuck" in time and has the coinage of the time period. You could see the German ones, the French pre-occupation coins followed by Vichy government issues, then US coinage, british coinage, and other countries' coinage changes as the war advanced...

Just curious do you throw away coins from all country's with smiler policy's such as Soviet Russia, Apartheid South Africe and Israel, plus coins minted during shameful periods in history of dozons of other country's?
I find that sad and closed minded to destroy history and the fact that some of the coins are Silver makes it even more stupid.

Did you just compare Nazis to Soviet Russia, South Africa and Israel? You obviously got online access, why don't you use it to educate yourself, instead of making inadequate posts, displaying your ignorance and anti-semitism?

This is definitely the time to close this thread.

He was just mentioning other countries shameful periods in history. This argument unfortunately comes up all the time, and it always turns ugly; so I hate to get involved in them but I'll say this. If a person is going to directly tie numismatics to a countries policies, (and in some instances atrocities), then they aren't going to have many coins to collect.

People will say I won't collect NAZI coins because of what the reign stood for, and the crimes they committed, but they have no problem collecting other countries coins who also have shameful parts in their history.

Here's a link to some 20th century genocides: The History Place - Genocide in the 20th Century So what, can we pick and choose what genocides we decide are bad enough that we can't collect those coins? Look at the deaths under the famines under Stalin, similar to the deaths under NAZI rule. But I have never once heard of someone arguing we shouldn't collect coins minted under Stalin's rule. Why?
