ok well my brothers birthday is coming up in a week and well since he's leaving out of the house already i would like to give him something to "remember me" and i was thinking of giving him a proof set of silver or something like that the year he was born. I was thinking if anyone had any good proof set i should buy or ideas ? He isn't a collector either so not buying him anything that big like i would buy for me. (he was born in 1990) Either way any ideas help thanks
1990 Eisenhower Silver Dollar Commemorative Since you mentioned your brother is living away from home, how about this coin, it's from his birth year and has a house on it: 1990 Eisenhower Silver Dollar [90% silver] Commemorative.
Go with the 1990 ASE. Should set you back about $25, but it is awesome and I am sure your brother with think so as well. TC
Understood about the Ike subject not being a match. Modern Coin Mint sells NGC graded Eagles and OGP eagles. Right now the only 1990 they have in stock is an 1990 Silver Eagle NGC Mint State 69 priced @ $35 +++ Mint Products also sells graded and OGP Eagles. Right now they have a 1990-S Proof Silver Eagle in OGP for $63.99 and 1990 Unc. (raw) Silver Eagle for $27.39, +++ Provident Metals have Unc 1990 ASEs for $29.23 and NGC Certified MS69 ASEs for $40.73.
Remember, brother is not a collector. A graded silver eagle might be lost on him. I'd opt for a raw one.....a coin that he could, if he wanted to, carry around as a pocket piece. Each time he reaches into his pocket for small change he'd be reminded of a brothers love....
Remember that non-collectors can become hooked too... I'll suggest that a graded coin is but one way to get someone else interested in coins and a solid graded coins a way to understanding what grading is all about in collecting, as well as a starting point for what TPG graded coins are all about if giving a TPG graded example. A slabbed coin might also protect the coin from the brother if he's rough or clumsy with things in general OR if you want to protect a really top quality example that you are giving him. A slabbed example might also help resell value beyond the bullion value of the coin-- not that he'd seek to sell such a special gift, but you never know. A slabbed coin could be carried around in a coat or coat's vest pocket as easily as a raw coin could become a pocket piece. The problems with carrying a pocket piece is that you could potentially loose it sometime.
I agree with green18, (for whatever it's worth). A 1990 ASE Proof or Uncirculated, in an airtight will make an excellent gift, and could very well hook Brother for Life! The Proof may be the better choice, as he could keep it in its purple case if he decides not to keep in his pocket! Steve P.S. Happy Birthday!
ASE in an Airtite solves everyone's concerns. Agree, it may become his good luck piece. It gets my vote.
I think i will just go for the ASE imo i will tell him to use it as a "lucky charm" and to have it with him wherever he goes.
I would buy the raw coin and a bezel with a chain. He could wear the necklace and always be reminded of you and home. The whole enchilada would cost less than $100 I think, and it's a once in a lifetime event. Harder to lose the jewelry than a single coin. If not a chain, a belt buckle might work ?
Go to Ebay error coins and search 1990. You will probably find something in your price range & it will entertain your brother & his friends forever. Very best regards, collect89 P.S. Beware of the usual fakes associated with higher priced coins.
Since your brother isn't a collector, I would vote with a 1990 type of large silver coin, like a ASE, Panda, whatever design you might think he would like. Buy it raw so if he mishandles it it doesn't matter. Also, raw will let him take it out and handle it, which is something a lot of people like to do. I know, the gasps from the audience here. We have been berated so much to not damage coins in the US we have lost out on one of the primary joys of collecting, that is handling the coins. How much joy is owning something encased in plastic? Especially to a non collector you might as well give him a plastic bottle with a picture of a coin on it.
