Perhaps to you, but this is the way some folks like to collect 'em. I don't always agree in what or how people collect, but I always respect their right to collect in the way they see fit.
No, it's not funny. It's each collectors choice. To each their own. You don't buy these coins for your reasons, they do. You are no more correct than are they. No need to point out people for their choice on this topic. You don't seem to appreciate these coins and what they mean to collectors, but you do seem intent on cutting others down over their collecting choices and joy that these coins are to be released again. You come off poorly versed to discuss the matter of graded coins and your screen name speaks to your preference on this topic. There's plenty of threads devoted to grading that you could take this topic to without hijacking this one any further. I suggest you do so or start your own to air your grievances. If you are a bullion enthusiasts why not join the Bullion Investing forum here, it's (supposed to be) devoid of numismatic topics.
I buy bullion, but I also purchase true numismatic coinage. The eagle topic should be in the bullion forum.
Your so called 'true numismatic coinage' can also be called bullion where any coins contain precious metals. Again you are just asserting your strongly biased opinion and expecting everyone else to agree with you. Good luck with that. There are plenty of topics that relate to bullion issues that you should take up in the bullion forum, doesn't matter if it's a maple, panda, kook or Eagle, bullion is bullion. This thread is doing just fine here without your comments. It's a thread for collectors not your deviation on bullion matters.
Either way, silver eagles are legal tender United States coinage and therefore, do apply to the US coin forum. In addition, this is specifically discussing proof silver eagles, which are not exactly intended to be purchased for bullion value, but are for collector/numismatic purposes. As far as not being of numismatic value, I believe the market clearly disagrees with that statement. As ye ole adage goes, one man's junk is another man's treasure. One collector's definition of [numismatic] value will always vary from another.
Back to the original topic, I have a question. I put in a subscription order for 10 proofs and the Mint site split it into two groups of 5 on my account page. Does anyone know if I will have to pay shipping once or twice on this?
I'm working on a set of the proof ASEs. I like the holders that they come in, so I don't buy them slabbed. They are very beautiful coins that will make a great display!
Sounds like you've got two subscriptions for five coins each..... Did you "check out" with a ten coin subscription?
When you put anthing larger than 5 in the quantity, it automagically splits them for checkout. I figured they would charge me shipping on each group of 5, just sucks.
Correct, I have two subscriptions of 5 each. I was thinking that they may only want to deal with one size box, which will only hold 5 sets. I guess this means that I will have to pay shipping for each set of 5. Luckily it is only $4.95.
It certainly looks that way. Keep us posted though. Maybe they'll let you slide as your original request was for a subscription of 10 pieces.
Just bumped my subscription up to 2.... hehe Thats half my paycheck for one week lol. Gonna get the parents to pay for one as a birthday present.
Anyone here care to make a ruff estimate of what the min-max mintage on these will be, based on when they were finely allowed to start making them and the fact that they can only make 200,000 per month? Any chance that they only just started this month? I would think that if they had been making them since September that someone would of leaked that info by now.
No,they didn't but about a month ago they managed to get ahead of the orders for the bullion pieces, no more rationing. That meant they were meeting the demand for the bullion coins so they could now start producing proofs for collectors as well.
I was just reading on a different site that the mint could of made some Silver Eagles in 2009 but they could not make enough to meet full collector demand so they decided not to make them at all. If the mint is going ahead with them this year along with the fact that the limit is set at 100 makes me think that the mint thinks it will be able to meet full demand but the question is, is the mint under estimating demand? I'm sure demand will be more this year then other normal years so if they mint them in numbers that would of met demand in years past then i think they might be a hot item.
In the worst case scenario they started them in mid September at 200,000 per month plus half that amount last month, that puts the max mintage at around 700,000 and the best case scenario is that they just started now and they are not able to pull of the 200,000 number making the min mintage in the 500,000 range
