Sure, that is ... a bronze medal. :p

Actually it commemorates the Swiss popular/legendary hero Wilhelm (William, Guillaume) Tell - specifically the opening/unveiling of the Wilhelm Tell monument in Altdorf (Canton of Uri, Switzerland). On the one side it says On the occasion of the unveiling Altdorf 1895 at the top; at the bottom you find this:
For (all) people and for (all) times his image shines bright,
and no matter whether experts argue, long live our Tell.

(Well, my rough translation - in German that rhymes.) The part about the arguing experts refers to the fact that it is hard to tell whether there is any truth to the Tell legend. But as in other cases, it is the spirit that counts ... Here is some brief info about the monument in Altdorf.

The other side shows Werner Stauffacher, supposedly one of the founders of the Swiss confederation, and his wife Gertrude. The text means Look ahead of you, Werner, not behind you. That is a quote from the play "Wilhelm Tell" that Friedrich Schiller wrote around 1800.
