Hi I'm new to the site. I've inherited some coins and I have no idea what they are worth or where to look. I'm not a coin collector so I could use any advice you have in marketing these coins. I'd appreciate any help you'd care to pass along. I'd like to move these and put the money elsewhere. I just don't know where to begin. There were graded by pcgs and are all in sealed cases. 1881 trade dollar graded pf 63 1871 3cent graded pr 64 1868 2 cent graded pr 65rb Thanks fltsfshr Where do I take them?
Be prepared to expect 30-35% of the value if you sell them to a dealer. You might consider enrolling in an on-line auction site and selling them yourself or putting them on consignment. My guide shows retail 1881 MS 63 trade dollar = $3340 1871 3c MS 64 = $1660 1868 2c MS65 pr = $1370 http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/pricesms/2cntpr/prices61.shtml
I can help you out with the current Dealer-Dealer prices. 1881 PR63 $1,800 ( either PCGS or NGC ) . 1871 3cent PR64 $625.00 PCGS NGC $680.00 . 1868 2cent RB $535-$550 . Now those are Dealer buy prices . I suggest you search some of the major auction house archives for recent auction prices if you will be selling to other than dealers . Dealers will probably offer you something short of the above quoted prices . So you will need to negotiate with them . Getting the prices 10gary has posted will be a good feat . That is Full Retail value . Good luck to you.
Thank you. I'd rather achieve more than 30% of retail value. Guess I'll have to do some negotiating. I'd like to get at least 60% of that. Wish me luck fltsfshr
If a dealer offers you 30%-35% you need to turn around and walk away... most respectable dealers will offer 80%+
I would consign them to an auction if you are not in a rush to get the money. Usually auctions return the best value for higher end coins. Not to say anything bad about dealers, they need to eat and that is their livelihood.
thanks everyone for your input. A little knowledge goes a long way. I'll be much more confident in my negotiations. fltsfshr
