So on a GSA do you guy's like them in the original holder or not?

I'm talking about a graded GSA. The ones with the NGC tape going around them with the grade on them. Or do you like them better in the real NGC holder with the words GSA in the holder?

Not sure what I think yet but I'm thinking I want to get mine reholdered and taken out of the OGP which I usually don't do.

Everyone has their own philosophy on this subject. Some would rather keep them in the OGP for the increased value. Some are concerned about the safety of the OGP case and whether some unscrupulous person might try to switch coins.

You should be aware that NGC does not warrant the coin in the original case for either condition or grade. Personally, I don't care about the increased value, if any, because I will leave that to my heirs to sort out. If I'm going to pay to have them graded, I want them in a slab with all of the guarantees that go along with it.

I leave mine in the original GSA holder as well as I think keeping it stock is best but that's just my preference. What's amazing is that over 40 years and there's still a ton of these floating around!

Eventually, I will get the remainder of mine slabbed, and then I will sell the boxes with the certificates.

Yea Chris that is one of the reasons I'm thinking about getting them regraded to the NCG holder (no NGC warranty).
Plus these do not fit in the same box because of the size difference so they stay out of order. I also think that these OGP'ed NGC ones can be tampered with fairly easily.

The ones that are not graded I leave in the holders for sure but just haven't decided about these yet.

The ones that NGC grades in the OGP cases have a hologram that will show evidence of tampering. My only concern is the warranty.

Yes they have a hologram and at the top a second sticker is there too to stop from opening the other side.

The reason it's amazing to you is because you don't realize what happens to coins. You, like many other collectors, seem to think that people buy these and then keep them. They don't. They buy them, keep them for a short while and then sell them.

The majority of those GSA coins have probably been bought and sold up to 50 times.

However you are right Doug but there are also many that get bought and stay with the estate until that estate is broken apart. It really has not been that long since they were put in those holders and Numismatists tend to keep their items as fresh and original as when they get them. I think a ton of them not in the holders is from the grading companies.

So Doug do you have an opinion on should I get it reslabed?

Personally, I'd leave it in the original holder.

    My 2 cents

If it were mine I would keep in the GSA holder.
and only have it graded if the coin was sure to MS-63/64+PL/DMPL.
graded by Ngc so it would stay in the GSA holder.

The one I am thinking about is already a NGC 63DMPL MS64. I just cannot put it with my other DMPL's in the same box and it just takes up more room in the SDB and is out of order because of this.

Hey, that's no problem, Duke. Just take a hacksaw and cut it down to the same size as the others.

Guess it depends on what's more important to you, maintaining originality or presentation. Myself, I never cared about presentation. If I wanted to show somebody my collection I got a box, pulled the coins out of the safe and showed it to them. Never once did anyone give a hoot if they were neatly stored and aligned in boxes or albums. And I sure as heck didn't ! I only cared about the coins.

Say you has a Mint & Proof set collection - you know of any neat presentation holders for those ? I never did. Or any of the Coin & Currency sets - kind of hard to put those in neat little holders too since there aren't any. And no, I'd never break them out of the original packaging and get them slabbed either. Even if the nickels and Buff dollars were 70s ! I knew what they were, that's all that mattered to me.

As for slabs, yeah, I kept all of mine in Intercept Shield lined slab boxes. And all the stuff in Air-Tites - just kept those loose in a couple trays in the safe with all of the various countries mixed together.

But that's why they make chocolate and vanilla Duke. When you buy ice cream, do you ask somebody else what flavor THEY like ? Or do you buy what you like ? ;)

Duke, I tend to like (along with Doug) the original packaging. I like the idea that NGC will leave them in the original holder and still grade them! That would be my preference were I to have mine graded. I bought it to be a GSA, once it is removed, although technically it came from GSA, I couldn't prove it was and therefore it kind of isn't anymore if you KWIM

    just my 2¢

I agree with you Doug and Mike about this as all but this one is just bugging me for some reason. I guess the lack of NGC warrantee was what started my dilemma. My other GSA's are not graded and stay in their box's with cert's too.
As for the mint and proof sets, I never remove those either. I pretty much am a OGP kind of guy but that lack of warrantee is killing me :D

Thanks for your opinions and I'll mull it over a bit.

Duke, what do you mean by warrantee? Your proof sets are authentic, are they not?

Or are you referring to grade?

Personally, I have seen you grade coins (from pictures) and I think you can trust your gut on that, you seem pretty solid

I mean on the GSA Graded CC it is wrapped in NCG tape and that tape reads that it is not a NGC holder and not covered by the warrantee.
So if I resubmitted it I'm assuming it would get the same grade and be in a "real" NGC holder with the warrantee and they would put GSA on the label too...

I like them in the holder but I avoid NGC coins so it makes it tough. I have three in the GSA case. A 64 DMPL graded by NGC, a toner and VAM. I have a couple PCGS coins with a GSA notation.
