I would agree, sadly cleaned....not so well . Thats awful news . The upside is , you are working with a reputable Dealer . I would have guessed it was Genuine .

I never thought about it much, but I do remember in pictures of the Chinese fake coin factories that they had a lot of fakes in slabs labeled "genuine", trying to pass off their stuff as genuine coins that had been cleaned so therefor not qualifying for a good slab.

Pretty sneaky and scary that they are forging heavily in circulated, problem coins now.

Just got back from Long Beach. Ken Frechman, from Estate Coins in Burbank refunded not only the original purchase price, but did also pay me for my grading costs. It's good to know that there are honorable dealers.

Before taking the coin [see photos at the start of this thread] to Ken, I showed it to four other dealers: one graded it VF, a second graded it EF cleaned, the third had reservations as to authenticity and the fourth immediately (and emphatically) said it was a fake. I did this test to see how easy/hard it is to get a "good" counterfeit past a knowledgeable dealer (and in no way tried to sell the coin; only wanted to get opinions as I am friends with 3 of the 4 dealers).
The upshot is that all of us have to be very careful in the face of what the Chinese are dumping on us.

Finally, I did get a replacement, this time a 1798 dollar (13 stars) NCS slabbed. I'd post a picture, but can't get a good quality image on my scanner (due to the coin being slabbed)

Is it common for draped busts to have partially weak strikes? I would've guessed fake due to the weak eagle strike compared to the rest of the coin.

Actually, the strike of the counterfeit was decent. My guess is that someone added some wear to remove some of the diagnostics of this known fake (see MIchael Fahey's column in the June 2, 2008 issue of coin World page 34).

That's the sort of coin I'd want evaluated by the best TPG. IMO that's not ANACS.

But whatever, I hope it works out well for you.

Originally, all I was looking for was authenticity. When a local dealer, Walt Ankerman whom I trust implicitly, expressed doubts about the coin, I decided to go with PCGS (at roughly twice the cost of ANACS). Luckily, the dealer I bought the Chinese counterfeit from refunded not only my original purchase price, but my PCGS fees ($58) in addition.

To pay 1% of purchase price to get a coin certified is reasonable. In this case, having the TPGs grade the coin was essential, ASAP. Think of all those people who don't think to get the coin certified before the return period is over. Legally, if the coin is not returned in the original sealed flip, the dealer does not have to honor return privaleges. I have had deals where had an early gold coin graded without any "conditionals", i.e. "cleaned", my upside was considerable. The coin dealer, though, offered to refund my purchase price less $250 if I satisfied return privalege. When NGC called the coin "cleaned" and "tooled", I expressed that problem piece back pronto! The dealer reluctantly refunded my money less the $250 fee.

great details, Au quality but porous?

Today I just collect lowly & cheap foreign coins:eek:. However years ago, right when Bust dollars were making one of their "step change price transitions" I bid on an AU 1795 Dr.B. out of Stack's. Unfortunately I lost it which is the story of my life: thus after 40 years I've never been able to buy a Bust dollar in any grade:heated:. Hence I packed up & moved to foreign.:dead-horse:

Normally don't these things have solid lusterous surfaces? :stormy: Your coin has the details of an AU but seems porous all over. However it could also be the photography and slightly spotty toning. If it's just a toning/coloring issue, and there are no problems with the surfaces, then I'd say 55 at least!. Normally even EF's are somewhat devoid of brest feathers on the Eagle. However you'd need a specialist (or a Bolander Book) as most of my experience comes from looking at 96's & 97's. I don't know if the 95's were better struck than the others.

Loving Dr.Bust types tho, I put an ad in Coin World to buy a choice AU Dr. bust Half at $900:grandpa:. I got one but discounted it to $850 as it was just a normal AU I thought:apu:. The guy accepted my offer. Here's a pix, unfortunately it's just the '06.

The coin won't be worth a penny more by submitting it to PCGS or NGC instead of ANACS (COINS are worth something; the plastic around the coins are not). Why not save the extra grading fee to buy more coins? And who says he wants to sell it? If I owned that it would stay in my possession for the rest of my life. (Edit: if it was actually real. You got your money back anyway I see but if all you were looking for is authentication ANACS is no worse than the PCGS/NGC and a heck of a lot cheaper.)

Any coin that valuable should be in a slab, so this can't happen. Will fakes ever get so good they can't be told from real ?

Don't know if you're quoting the 95 dollar or the 06 half. With the half the "punchline" is that the ad was 1983 and TPG didn't exist back then.
