Doug, I equated your statement with your use of impossible or impossibility . I stand corrected on that . If you have that reference from D.Q. please let me know where I might find that. I'm by no means saying he did not make the statement , you wouldn't pretend to quote something which is untrue. I would like to read that article.
If nothing else, this debate shows how difficult it is to judge if a coin's been dipped from a photograph. In the end, it doesn't really matter to me -- the coin is what the coin is. I wouldn't dip my own (lesser) 1917, but I'm not sure it wasn't dipped long ago.
This may be why..... Came across this story today and it may offer a reason why D.Q may have made that statement. http://www.coinnetwork.com/forum/topics/another-red-flag-on-coins?commentId=2196090:Comment:54253 Perhaps they regularly practice this practice . Interesting article.
It's in one of his books, think it's the encyclopedia of Morgan dollars or something like that. But if you want I'll give you his email address and you can ask him yourself.
I have spoken directly with him , in the past regarding one of his personal offerings which I had bid on, and a question I had regarding His book " Numismatics Before the Civil War" ( which I have signed and numbered ) which I may offer for Sale in the CT classified Section . I had not thought about that until just now. But sure , shoot me his e-mail . I would truly like to know in what reference that statement was made . Thanks Doug.
yes unless you happen to be spock who managed to find untoned silver but GD i dont understand y u keep saying gimme a break didnt u retire from collecting coins years ago so if ur not at it how can u ask for a break. i am puzzled.

I would bet both of my thumbs that this coin has been dipped at some point or another... just done properly.
