So, I purchased last week off ebay my first (not the last) Educational $1. After receiving it I was impressed with the crisp feel. It has 3 folds. However, I bought it mainly for the low serial number. Seems to be alot of high serial numbers and for the $$ I got this one. Anyway, my question is I noticed thread?? on the front. There's nice green and red etc. colors and seems like some sort of material. Can you help me with what this is and if the bright colors on the note makes it an added feature. Thanks for looking.
Very nice note and yes a quite low s/n. The threads are there as part of a counterfeit detecting type thing. The bills then and as now are made of a rag content. Thats why the fibers. The company is something like Crane and co. out of Mass. I hope I got this right. Dean 295
Thanks Dean for the info. As far as the serial number I came across one that the serial was 35!!! It was on auction off the web for $12,000
Nice note, I saw one about a year ago that was not much better than a rag for 200, and then someone posted a link to a california web shop where one just as raggy was listed at 2200, Now you have to start looking for the 2 and 5 dollar notes.
Thanks guys for the comments. I'm very excited to have it. I might just send it out to be graded. Now, for the next investment..$500 note..
Congrats on your first Educational note! That SN is lower than the ones pictured in either: A Guide Book of United States Paper Money 2nd Ed. (Official Red Book) by Friedberg [SN: 68756, page 36] Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Paper Money - 6th Ed., by Gene Hessler [SN: 444951, page 79]

Dean 295 is right but I also understand what Hunt1 is talking about. You just have to be very cautious when buying such nice notes off of fee-bay. Here's a nice video to better show you the printing and making of U.S. paper money.
True, but Hunt1's comment seems out of place in the context of this thread as the OP seems informed about his purchase and acquired a safe note. I think many here are well aware of eBay shenanigans. I also have the links to that video ready at hand and often share them, they are on my visitor messages page and here is the rest of the episode plus some other BEP demo videos: Modern Marvels: Money, The History Channel Money Part 1/5 Money Part 2/5 Money Part 3/5 Money Part 4/5 Money Part 5/5 BEP Spider Press Demo, Intaglio steel plate printing demo BEP Demo Old Printing Press: TNA Coin & Currency Show
