Precisely because of condition and full bands. PCGS list it at $5400 for MS-64.

1945 P mint mercury dimes very scarce with full bands. my greysheet is a couple months old but its like $12 w/o fb and $4000 with fb in MS64 so I guess this is a bargain:D

Even though the date is common, out of all the 1945 Mercs PCGS has graded, only 43 have graded MS-64 with FB.

Hmmph, I guess I didn't realize just how much the bands added to the value. Redbook has MS-65 valued at $28

Those full bands are very rare. That redbook value is for not so rare version that doesn't have full split bands.

    What is "FSB"?

Wow, the redbook lists that coin in MS-65 at $28. I think I would buy two and tell myself that I have split bands (one on each coin).

This is a case where I just shake my head at people and what they will pay a premium for. The dime is already so small and we are focused on a gap that has to be 1/100th of an inch wide.

    FSB = full split bands
On the back of the coin there are two lines that cross the middle of the column horizonally, on nearly all coins these bands look like a single band.

That gash above Liberty's eye negates the FSB status IMO. Do you think it would cross over to PCGS? Remember, PCGS states that their values are for PCGS graded coins.

That gash over the eye could negate the numerical grade, but it's definitely an FSB designation in my opinion. You could probably get that coin to cross over.

BTW, the last MS64 FB graded by PCGS and sold by Heritage in '09 went for $4600. Care to gamble? :D

Makes me wonder what this company is seeing that I'm not though. Why don't they crack it out and send it to PCGS?

I quess I'm just saying that I would not want the coin because the gash would always catch my eye.

I would want the coin as the FB's would catch my eye!

I do understand what you are saying though. I'm the same way. I know technically yada-yada-yada....but when I'm looking for a coin for my personal collection I would hold out for a 64 that was in better 64 shape than that.

Yeah but when you flipped back over - the gash would still be there. If its just FSB you want, why not buy it in a cheaper year?

    Cause I have those.
Do you not buy the lower grade 16D to fill the hole either?

It's a very hard to find Split Band that I dont have. I have many and that hole just sits there...empty looking at me. That is much worse then that hit on the eyebrow :p

Because they know it's not MS to begin with. The coin is graded by PCI, a company known for gross over-grading. Based on the pics the coin looks AU to me. And the bands are a maybe.
