If you really can buy both the Jackson and VB proof for $685 each you should buy them right now if you can afford them!! They are probably worth $850-$950 each easily.

The US Mint made cases for them in 2007 and if you put all of the coins in the 2007 sized capsules they would work nicely. I keep mine in my safe deposit box anyways, so I don't really need a nice case for them :)

There's a guy over on CU selling the original boxes and he has nice pics up for them here:

Apmex may have raised their price but back on eBay the FS that are selling are still under $700. Sure folks are asking much more, but I don't see any bids at the higher levels...usually $665-685.

Many people have slabbed their FS. Since the Mint proofs usually are graded either 69 /70 and already come in an air-tite , what is the advantage of slabbing Mint proof coins?

    Thanks Elaine

But I wonder what the Bid price / how much AMPEX would pay to buy the same coins would be? I own two FS coins so I'm not trying to be negative, but I see a big difference on eBay between high ask prices and what others are willing to pay. There are lots of auctions with high ask prices and no bids. I just picked up a Jefferson proof for $680...almost $200 below AMPEX's asking price.

I wonder how much wiggle room, AMPEX has from those stated prices. If you came to them and offered $100-$150 lower than their ask price on the $800-$900 proofs would they accept? Six of the FS are a reasonable amount (approx. $700) above current melt - $650.

The Mint's limited sale of 1/2 oz gold eagles has probably increased demand and sale of the FS. The FS sell for a relatively small premium to the Eagles and they come in a very nice gold box and simulated wood case.

From Apmex, I say the FS is NO good. Stay away!!!

These coins are highly probable to be stock bought from the Mint which may contain returns from cherry-picking customers. Apmex sells notoriously highly marked up inventory. Apmex announced they were getting out of numismatics in 2009, but are either still dabbling in collectible coins with the FS collectible coins or they are simply withholding their real business opinion that these are just bullion coins, bullion coins that the uninformed collector is willing to pay a huge mark up for... and Apmex are all over that kind of profit.

If the FS coins on Apmex are those in the OGP (not certified), they have probably been reviewed by Apmex's in-house grade assessment team and considered to be borderline or below MS/PR 69/70 grades... you could be seriously overpaying for these FS coins if buying them from Apmex and you will certainly be paying a lot for their s/h.

Apmex are a reputable company that I recommend, for bullion, not collectible coins.

Received both my Buchanan FS coins in on Monday and boy was I disappointed with the quality. Both are going back and I couldn't get to the computer fast enough to place another order. Could have been that both were somebody's rejects but I don't know. The proof is "available" but the unc is back ordered. That is good news assuming that they are minting up a whole new batch and I won't be stuck with someone's rejects.

Also, keep in mind gang, the value of many of these coins will not ultimately be determined by the mintage but rather by the demand. There will always be a greater demand for the Liberty subset than the rest of the series.

@Krispy and gang..... Yakpoo says hi. His computer has been down for sometime and he has been procrastinating on getting it fixed. Actually, he is spending all his money on the FS coins!!! LOL! He says hi and that he will be back soon.

Sorry to hear about your FS coins Joe.

I think the coins that are going to be worth the most are the one's with the varies liberty heads.. even if the mintage is higher on them:thumb: Not many people can afford the set and even if they could the subject matter just doesn't get most collectors excited so those people are only going to pick up a few and they are going to want the best looking ones:hail:

Oh that's funny!... but what if he has foresaken his phone line and mobile as well... will he be like a FS crack-head huddled on the street using a payphone to place his orders on release day??? better bring a bunch of quarters if the Mint puts him on hold! LOL!

Is this the reason that it appears that so many people are having their FS coins graded and slabbed?

Most of the eBay auctions appear to be for slabbed coins. I recently purchased a Jefferson Liberty on eBay in the original Mint packaging and to my eye it appears very clean - see photo in post #718. Wouldn't this proof be a 69/70 if graded?

Don't you believe that I could sell this coin with just a good photo or is there a concern about photos being manipulated in Photoshop?

I feel that the FS coins are much nicer in the Mints packaging rather than the slabs.

That might be a good plan. Aren't 800 #s free from payphones? Wait, do payphones still exist?

Sure they still exist! Otherwise he'll be mail ordering his FS coins. :D

Price variation between spouses is what has caught my attention. Is this just a fad?

Glad a few are talking price. I have been thinking of playing catchup on the First Spouse Uncirculated for 2007, 2008, & 2009. (I am doing good on the proofs right now).

Boy, are the prices changing a lot between different spouses. Does any one know if any mintage numbers are out on the exact production number breakdown specific to proofs and uncirculated?

P.S. The price variation was noticed on www.apmex.com.
