I'll take a shot at this. VG6. A Little light in the hair detail. to get it to a F... Very nice example by the way.. Is that a die crack at 12:00 on the obverse?

It might be, I'm not sure. The coin is lighter in the photo than under the lens. I used a very long exposure time to get that photo. It might be. There are many more imperfections vissible on the photo that you could see with the eye, even with a lens.

What would you think of its approximate value?

I''m far too ignorant of US coin values to even hazard a guess on the value of this one, but I have to comment on the pictures.

IMHO they conclusively demonstrate the problem with excessive magnification. At an equivalent screen size to a 3-4x view, the scratch at the top of the reverse and the ding at the left of the ONE are nowhere near as annoying as they are in the huge enlargement view.

What ding ;) I see no ding left of the 1.

If it isn't a ding, what is that mark two-thirds of the way between the "O" of "ONE" and the wreath?

THAT ONE, not the 1 in 1817!

    Gotcha ya

Actually I was concerned about possible sorrosion of the obverse of the coin to the right of the portrait.

Good looking coin! I hope I look as good when I'm nearly 200 years old... :)

    Hi,

I think VG-6 to VG-8 is about right. It's worth $18.00 to $20.00 or so.

    Have Fun,

    Bill:
I saw your note (above) and have ben seing this a lot lately.
Since when do we have a VG-6? Is this the old VG-? I was always under the impression that it was G-4 and then, for a good plus, G-6.
With a VG-8 as the base line, then a VG-6 would be VG minus?
    Just asking.

Ruben, I was actually wondering about this on the reverse. What exactly is around the letters at the top (crusty around the "ates" in states and especailly the "o" in of). Could be gunk, and it'[s impossible to tell what those blobs are (look greenish) on the reverse towards the bottom.

I really don't know what that is but its not green on the real coin. It looks like some soil attacked to the coin.

It almost looks like some white dust. Can is be blown off with a can of compressed air?

I agree with Bill VG starts at 8 and 6 is in the Good range, but this coin with the uneven wear on the right side rim and stars would only go G-4. In order for the Liberty Head Large Cent to go VG Liberty, date and stars need to be clear which they are not the second, third and sixth stars have too much wear and damage. Still a nice coin.

13 star variety. 20-25 bucks I would say. And I still say its a 6.. "VG or G" your choice..

I think I paid 28, but I'm not sure since I brought a few of them together.

I went braindead folks :) There is no VG-6 It should be G-6 which is a notch above G-4 and a notch below VG-8.

The Grading for Business Strike coins start at:

    Poor 1
    Fair 2
    Almost Good 3
    Good 4-6
    Very Good 8-10
    Fine 12-15
    Very Fine 20-25
    Extra Fine 35-45
    About Uncirculated 50-58
    Mint State 60-70

    Then for Proofs it goes
    Proof 60-70
But if a proof is cirulated it might be such as PF58 or PF20---such as the above grades for Business Strike coins but with the PF in front of the number.
