I went through old boxes I had in the basement. Some I have not looked at in many years as they were from my parents estate. Finally opened a box and found an old cigar box with tons of old coins that used to be from my grandfather. He was born in Germany and passed away in the mid 80's. I had remembered looking at this as a kid. Completely forgot about them. Some I figure are not worth so much. I have 15 - 20 Centavo pieces dates: 196? (can't read last number), 1946, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1970,1974,1973, 1969, and 1943. I have about 20 Un Pesos with various date ranges from 1970-1978 I have 50 Centavos - 6 of them, ranging from 1967-1977 2 Cinco Pesos 1976, 1977 1 Diez Centavos 1959 1 Cinco Centavos 1968 I have some 20 c (Centavos?) small silver coin 1977-1978 (4 in total) and one Cincuenta Centavos 1976 I'm assuming most of those are not worth a whole lot. Then the rest range from an old Chinese Coin which I know what that is but not what it's worth. The rest I'm not sure of the value, because I can find some similar online but not quite the same. I'm posting a link to all the pictures https://plus.google.com/photos/106262321488595766946/albums/6007113070741430321?banner=pwa Thanks for help in advance! Mel
Also, this is not about the worth, but some of them just look dirty. Like they have dirt or something on them. Is it okay to gently clean or should I leave them alone? If okay to clean, with what just dish soap and water? Thanks!
I dont think any of them are silver, however they should be valuable to you because of their history. I would not clean them, just leave them the way they are.
Welcome to the forum! U.S. coins seem to be more collectible and hold more value, but there are many members here that can help you out. Oh, and never clean a coin.
Grand Pop had a love there. Leave 'em be. There's nothing of significant value that I can see other than they belonged to your dear grandfather. Cherish them my friend......
They aren't worth a lot, but they are cool coins! They are way better than the average foreign coins. Some are from the 1800's. I would keep them!
He did make quite a few of them into buttons, and I think one German coin with a lion on it into a ring. I'm cataloging these, and am wanting to know dollar amounts for each for insurance purposes. In case there is a fire or someone steals them I can buy them again. Still won't be the same because they were not my grandfather's but I'll have the collection again. Mel
Forget trying to insure a batch of foreign coins, which will involve a precise inventory and a lot of hassle if you file a claim. Just rent the smallest size of safety deposit box and keep them there. You will no doubt find other items to keep in the box, jewelry, photos, as well as personal papers, etc. For safety deposit, credit unions are usually cheaper than banks. In my case, the bank charges $110 for a 10x10, credit union charges $50 (per year). This is the largest box generally available, sounds like you can get by with the smallest.
Your coins have a lot of sentimental value, but not whole lot of monetary value. From your pics: -Pic 1&2 -Austria 10 heller 1895 - 1 dollar -Pic 3&4- Bavaria German States 1796 Pfennig - 15 dollars -Pic 5&6 - France 10 centimes 1936 - 2 dollars -Pic 7&8 - Asian coin can't identify maybe someone else can help here -Pic 9&10- Swiss 5 rappen 1919 - 3 dollars -Pic 11&12 - German 1 pfennig 1917 d - 3 dollars -Pic 13&14 - German 10 pfennig 1875 - 2 dollars -Pic 15&16 - France 10 centimes 1936 - 2 dollars -Pic 17&18 - France 10 centimes 1929 - 2 dollars -Pic 19&20 - France 5 centimes 1926 - 2 dollars -Pic 21&22 - German 1 pfennig 1876b - 4 dollars -Pic 23&24 - German 5 pfennig 1893a - 4 dollars -Pic 25&26- Cuba 1 centavo 1920 - 3 dollars -Pic 27&28 - Austria 20 heller 1916 - 2 dollars -Pic 29&30 - France 5 centime 1912 - 2 dollars -Pic 31&32 - Austria 1000 kroner - 3 dollars each -Pic 33&34 - German 20pfg notgeld? .......................
