Saint Thomas and Prince. 50 escudos 1970, silver .650, weight - 18 g., mintage - 150000 pcs."500th Anniversary of discovery".
Most of the coins shown here I find very attractive, some of them I have ... and that last one is interesting because it celebrates exploration in a particular way. For those who are not familiar with the "Lusíadas": Camões wrote those tales in the mid/late 16c, and they were first published in 1572. When that coin was issued to commemorate the 400th anniversary, Portugal still had a dictatorial regime, but Camões and his most famous publication have been equally celebrated after the 1974 revolution. Here is another coin that features a Portuguese explorer and writer, Fernão Mendes Pinto. The sea waves are formed by the names of places he went to. Attached is an image of an actual coin; this design image (link) shows them in more detail. Christian
Ummm, well I married a beautiful Portuguese girl, so I must get some points, eh? I don't have any Portuguese coins (yet), but I do have this amazing ol' Portuguese note (from 1942)
Sure, but not in a coin forum, hehe. The note is attractive too, and the man who is depicted (Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal) can also be found on a €2 coin issued last year. It is primarily about Guimarães, the city where he may have been born about 900 years ago (Guimarães was a European cultural capital last year), but the guy with the Swiss cheese sword is supposed to be him ... Thanks. I think Portugal has a lot of nice coins. I never hear anyone talking about them but I have been quietly assembling a set on my own. I don't know how many coins are in this exploration set but I hope to get them all eventually.
