My Mood: | Do I have a beef?
I just received this coin from an Ebay seller. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Do I have a beef or did I miss clues in the bid listing?
ps I hope you can tell from my photo, but I think it was cleaned with a wire brush. There is NO toning on this 208 year old coin.

I really, really think you already know the answer for this one. Sorry to say I'd even complain about the postage costs since that is about what I'd pay for the coin itself. I really don't mean to be mean, but even the photos on ebay look poor. Not sure if paying to send back would be worth it either.
If I were you I'd just keep it as a reminder to be really more carefull in the future. |

The listing indicates a 3-day money back guarantee, so you don't need a beef. It comes down to one thing... do you like the coin ? If not, send it back.
Any decent seller will refund your money cheerfully.

Now the second part. Since this is still turned out to be an OK deal rather than a bargain, I really don't want to return it. I'm just disappointed.
Of the ten coins I've gotten on Ebay, this is really the first time I've gotten less than I expected and it followed my receiving a coin that blew me away because it was so much better than I expected.
Since both merchants and collectors frequent this site, I'm looking for suggestions before I give a seller his first negative feedback, which is my initial impulse.

The Seller's pics don't represent the scratches that your pics clearly show and their item description is lacking any such notes regarding this as well, yet the Seller subjectively says it's a nice coin. Perhaps this is a lesson learned the hard way for you. I'd personally say that the amount you are out probably doesn't warrant the trouble of a complaint despite any misrepresentation. They have a VERY short return policy too which is nasty. You could shoot them an email and request a refund and see how it goes. Good luck to you and sorry for the bum deal.

I normally collect the dregs of numismatics...(hey, it's cheap and I'm poor!) but even I would not accept that coin for my collection.

This is a great example of someone taking a picture of a coin that hides ALL of the coins problems... This picture was shot intentionally dark IMO. Tho it appears to have been scanned. I think this is a good thread to learn from when one thinks of buying coins without good pictures.

Only takes a thumb rub to steal the tone off those old pure coppers. Just notify seller and return the coin. Really not worth leaving a neg for seller, unless he refuses to refund. I don't like buying photo/scan coins, I want them in hand for carefull inspection. just My 2 cents , ozarktravler

This might be a good piece to use to experiment with retoning. I remember the old timers used to carry buffed coins around in their underwear for a month to get the toning going again.
I don't know if that works, but the story was always good for a laugh.
