It seems to be here now, but the dog needs to go out.

Suggestions to do what? Clean/remove the tape from that cent?

I suggest that you soak it in pure distilled water for a few weeks, exchange the water every few days with new distilled water or change it if/when the water becomes dirty.

Maybe after a few days/weeks, the tape might lift off. If the adhesive from the tape is dried on the coin, maybe the water will also dissolve/loosen it and it may lift off. But it very well may have bonded to and altered the surface of the coin under the tape,

Otherwise I suggest you do little else in any attempt to clean it.

 

Actually, I also wanted to save the handwriting sample included with the coin. Compound problem, but you are correct I be leave about going just for the coin.
So I wanted to spread out the blame and give the surviving coin away.

Attempt to move tape a little at a time. If it comes off cleanly, continue. If much glue left behind, stop and go to cointalk.com and ask how to clean glue from a coin.

 

you already got the tape off, and it has a bunch of old tape gunk on it, right? to get that off, try rubbing a dab of ketchup onto the penny, then rinse it off with water. dont use a brush. repeat until the tape residue goes away

 

ketchup is acidic, hence (further, destructive) damage WILL occur.

I just had it pointed out damage is going to happen to one LWC. 1916 S.

That is what it appears to be at this point. And that is progress from where I began.

Before that it was a wad of stuff headed to the landfill.

So lets get together on this folks.

why not? Distilled water. If I'm nuts, let me know. I don't know how 200+ degrees will hurt it? Actually, you shouldn't have to bring it to a boil. Just nice and hot.

I never tried but I think if you get a tape with a much stronger adhesive than the one that's on the coin and routinely slightly touching the residue part with it, it will eventually completely pull off the sticky substance.

 

Don't bring it to an actual boil, because the roilling water will bang it around. Just get it close. Shouldn't have to leave it in too long. The tape should just "fall" off. Move it around as little as possible in the pot, to avoid scratching. Use a plastic strainer to strain it out.

If anyone out there thinks this is stupid, please let me know. I don't see why it shouldn't work great?????
