Excited to say I have bought this error note and now have it in my possession. I posted a thread about it some time ago when a coworker asked me to take a look at what his mother-in-law had sitting in her safe. She had found it in circulation some years ago and just tucked it away. She recently decided that it wasn’t doing her any good so she offered to sell it to me. Of course I jumped at the chance!!! For the 1st time I am considering sending a note to a TPG (PCGS) for grading and authentication. The grade will probably be XFish due to the way it has been handled and I am sure it is genuine but I would like to have it done regardless if for no other reason to have it sealed in a TPG holder. It is a really cool error and I am very excited to own it!!! :D

Wow, that's quite an error! Can you imagine getting that in change from McD's? I'd be looking over my shoulder wondering if anyone was watching :)

Wow! An error like that as a circulation find!! That's something alright.
It's very strange how there's just that little bit of the black ink plate showing on the face. Have you searched the SN and the other SNs that would have been on that sheet to find out if there are other known/similiar errors like this? maybe already graded/authenticated? Very cool note. Congrats on that score.

Thanks Dave, I am not sure how I would react but am certain that my normal give nothing away poker face would fail me miserably. I might just cause those same types of wrinkles as I shove it in my pocket and run for the door!

Krispy ~ hate to say that I have no idea on how to run such a search! Sounds like a great idea though.

Thanks. :)

Might be difficult without knowing the series of the note....

Let's see here: a serial number in the F42..I range, with a DC-sized back plate number. That could belong to Series 2003A, 1995, 1988A, 1985, or 1977A. I think we can eliminate 1977A since the back plate isn't four digits, and we might be able to eliminate 2003A if the note was found before July 2006, but that still leaves three possibilities.... And which other serials would come from the same sheet would depend on the series, too, since the run size has changed over time. :(

Maybe you can PM NUMBERS I think he runs or participates in the USPaperMoney.info site somehow. Maybe with the series date of that note plus the SN can help you narrow down searches in 'Error Note' categories on Heritage or other auction sites. I'm not sure of there's any other way, maybe even try Where's George... someone else might have found and saved one. Just some thoughts.

edit: WOW! NUMBERS Beat me to it! Thanks!

He will ask her tonight. He believes that it has been more than 10 years and maybe more than 20. He will ask and see what she remembers.

Please do and let us know (Im sure you will) because I'm excited for you. That is quite a find!

Is it possible that it was altered after it left the presses? I would think the back would be affected also by any process though.

According to Dr. Bart's Book on Errors, that is a missing 2nd face printing with a rarity factor of R-8. Prices on these notes range from 1K and up.

In his chapter on these errors he does mention at least 6 examples from the East Coast area that were altered via some solvent and neutralizer. I am not implying by any means that this is the case with your note, I would have no idea, but he does say that if a note has been altered that the chemicals used would elimininate any natural odor the paper would have from the ink and paper itself. He also mentions that some TPG Co's can easily miss a chemically altered note and that the notes he wrote about had to be verified via a scanning electron microscope and via the iron pigment particles from the removed black ink on the notes face.

I think this is a really cool find on your part and that you were in the right place at the right time my friend. How do you really verify this error? I do not know, but having it, sure would make me want to find out.

Regards,

RickieB

hiho off to work we go

HUGE, obvious error that made it past the BEP inspectors (the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue must have just come out) and the bank tellers and then briefly circulated. What a find!

What are the odds? 10 million to one? 20 million?

I have always wanted a nice crisp SC or FRN missing it's 3rd printing (seal and serial #s). If I could pick one up at a decent price I would jump at the chance.

I may just start looking.....

RickieB, Thank you very much for the information! I have spent some time (as you can imagine) looking at this not under magnification. I can tell you that the security threads are not altered and the material of the paper looks good. The note had obviously been handled and there are a couple light dirt smudges. I do want to get this authenticated and placed into a sealed slab to preserve it.

I cannot even imagine the odds of finding something like this and have to imagine it goes into the billions, not millions. As a private collector you don't have the kind of access a dealer, banker, or distribution point would.

As far as value goes, the only way I will really know is by seeing another example at a proper auction sell. While this isn't a one of a kind, I am sure there are only a handful of these that have ever made it to the street. In terms rarity, I guess R8 says it all. :)

LOL - If that is all it takes I will sign them up the next time a kid stops at my door with one of those school programs to buy magazines. Too bad we cannot flash hot computer code in front of those optical scanners to take their attention away from these great looking errors :) Afraid these types of errors will not see the light of day in this day and age. Those that exist, are probably it unless something bizarre happens.

Darryl,

I thought you might like to follow this TeleTrade auction for a similar note that will be up tomorrow, Monday 1/25: Small Size-Federal Reserve Note, Fr. ?, $1, Error, PMG 66EPQ

Thanks Krispy,

Been learning a little about errors. The error you posted and mine are quite different it seems. The type shown on the teletrade is like the one RickieB mentioned in the rarity post. It is completely missing the 2nd print which happens when two sheets pass together with the bottom sheet missing the print. Mine is less rare (R4) and is classified as inadaquet ink. Value is probably somewhere between $90 and $150 based on some recent HA auctions.

Still very cool to have and shocking to see! :) Thanks for thinking of me!

BR ~ Darryl
