My Mood: | A Commemroative...Outta My Vault
Okay, so I really don't have a vault, more like a drawer, but you get the picture...
Here is a coin that I inherited from my dad, which he got from his dad for his birthday a while ago, along with another commemorative. I posted this a little while back, but I redid the picture. |

But, I don't care, it has more sentimental value than anything else... Wouldn't trade this coin for the world |

I think it is an underrated commem. There is a lot going on in the design.

I believe my grandpa fought in Korea, in addition for other things he did for this country, may he rest in peace.
I've always been drawn to coins that tell a story of American's history, through a war, or peace, or even through the simplest design of an eagle, they all stand out in their own special way, and I like them all the same.
In this particular coin, like you said, a lot of stuff going on, mostly in the obverse, and added with the simplicity of the reverse, it makes a beautiful coin |

After this commemorative was issued, the U.S. Mint said they would never strike another commemorative coin for an anniversary other than 50th, 100th, 150th etc. Apparently, a lot of people who were not familiar with the Korean War didn't know why this coin was issued for the 38th anniversary, and it just caused too much confusion.

The line on the reverse of the coin that goes through the map is the 38th parallel, by the way. Very nice coin!

| A coin can't have any higher value. I would slab it and pass it to your son in the future.

I guess it would be less confusing to do anniversary commemoratives by increments of 50's, and not having a bunch of 18, and 23, and 34 year anniversaries. Quote:

Want to keep it the way I got, and how my dad got it, and how his dad got it. I want it to be that way, for as long as I own the coin |

I have always liked that design. I think it is a very cool coin. I didn't care under the year it was released...the 38th anniversary of the war. I know the line was drawn at the 38th parallel, but it just seemed like a dumb year to issue a commemorative. I have been told the revenue generated from the coin was part of the funding that went into the Korean War Veterans Memorial though.
