$5 Bill Question

I didn't realize until today that in 2006 both the old $5 bill and the new 2006 designs were printed... My question is approximately how many of each were printed? And why both kinds?

i don't know how many but the reason you find 2 types is that they started to print the new bills in march of 2008 but that was still the 2006 series . Hopefully someone can answer this better for you .

i dont know if you can know exaclty how many of each were ptined as i think both were printed at the same time for a while.. not really sure. www.uspapermoney.info/serials will tell you appx how many were printed once you know the date the newer design was started.

There were 409,600,000 of the non-colorized 2006 $5's printed, which is pretty short for a $5 series these days. The colorized 2006 $5 is still the most recent issue, so I haven't bothered to add up the total printage because it may keep changing...though the switch to Series 2009 ought to be coming through any month now. Feel free to add up the total yourself if you like; all the serial ranges are here.

What I can't understand is why this major design change did not warrant a new series.

I wish currency was dated in the year it was produced!

Beacuase there wasn't a change in the Sec. of the Tres. or the Tres. of the U.S. when they switched to the colorized version. You'll see a series 2009 next since BO was elected president.
