I'd stay away from ebay on any exspensive coins until you've learned the ropes , but you did ask first and that shows your a smart newbie .

I'm relieved that both of you seem to think the first one doesn't appear to be a fake.

Thanks for taking a look.

I'm open to the possibility that the first one could be a counterfeit, though from what I can see, it looks OK. But I'm not open to the possibility that the second one could be genuine.

gotcha, Mark

I took it you meant "after a cursory glance the first coin doesn't appear to be an obvious fake, subject to more detailed scrutiny."

FWIW, I deal with "subject to" opinions every day.

You took my comment correctly. You sound pretty bright for a person who apparently buys expensive uncertified coins off of Ebay.

I appreciate your observation even if what you said translates "you sound pretty bright for a guy who's done a dumb thing."

I'm not easily offended.

Most of my eBay coin purchases have literally been nickel & dime kinda stuff seasoned with a 40+ year experience of casual collecting.

I started when "Brilliant Uncirculated" was the ultimate coin.

BTW this one's going back.

I really don't need it since I already have an MS 1895-O.

And you guessed it: it's "Brilliant Uncirculated."

I agree. The coin is authentic but is a problem coin and should thus be avoided anyway.
