2005D Mint Set quality

I just received my un-circulated 2005 Mint set. The quality of the 2005D Kennedy half leaves a lot to be desired. It was poorly struck. On front size of the coin, the lettering around the edge is faint or missing. For example only the “TRU” is viewable out of the “TRUST”. Also, the coin has several deep scratches. My question is; would this coin be considered an error and may be worth anything or should I send it back to the mint for a refund?

I just received my set also and have the same comments about the quality. Since I consider these coins to be more 'proof' type set (since they really aren't true mint sets) and they should have had better handling, I am not impressed. Some of my coins have poor strikes, rubs, dings, etc. I am not sure about sending it back and I am not sure that the true 'error' qualification would apply. I only collect Proof and silver Proof sets so this was just an experiment to see how much the mint sets for the buffalo years would appreciate. So if you are holding them for error status, I think you will be disappointed.

Thumbs down 2005 Mint Sets

I also have recieved several us mint sets that were of the poorest quality coins and packaging I have ever seen from the mint, sets had scratches all over the Ocean in view nickle (one had a deep gouge in the field above the date). I have several that have foriegn matter sealed inside with the dollar. I will be returning them to the mint.

Well, I received my set a couple of days ago and I have to tell you that mine look fantastic.

Every coin in the set (especially from the Philadelphia Mint) are fully struck. The Bison Nickel is one of the best I've seen. It would probably grade MS-69 except for a small scratch on Jefferson's cheek.

No problems with my Kennedys, either... in fact, they're some of the finer examples I've seen in Mint Sets in quite a few years. Even the Sacagaweas are spot-free.

The satin finish is nice and adds a lot of luster and eye appeal.

Overall, I think the Mint out-did themselves on these sets. If your sets have these problems, I would certainly return them.

I only opended one set, and i was really impressed with the quality. I plan on putting them under the 40X this weekend, but so far so good...

If you are unhappy i would return them to the mint for replacement...

My Denver set is also less than great. Not sure if it is worth the expense to exchange it. The Philly stuff looks great.

Hey SilverDollarMan

I agree with you that most coins from the mint is junk...they don't care about collectors any more...all they care about is how much more they can charge.

So what I am gathering from the mint sets is it's luck of the draw! I ordered 21 sets to sell with my 21 sets of silver proofs. Should I open the mint sets and look for the high grades? sounds like there will not be a lot of high grade coins this year.
