Ok guys, I picked up some more additions for my large cent set.
I picked up an 1859 N9 upgrade, Now I have a total of 6 or 7 of these, but this one is boreder line XF, so it now resides in my set.
And I finally scooped a really good deal on an 1858 after a couple years of actively checking the prices on all the ones I see at shows.
I missed the hammer on one that sold on heritage at Long beach and I was kicking myself for it. But oh well.
This is the key of the series and is usually overpriced at all the shows.
There is a guy that comes to an antique show here and he won't sell one for less then 180$.
I peg it as VF 35 in hand, I know the pictures don't quite show that but I swear I just can't seem to get the hair to show up all that great.
This now means I finally have a coin from every year they made them in my set. Now I just need to finish hunting down the 1891, 1859, 1858, and all teh smaller non Major varietys. I am very excited to be able to say that if I really want to I could retire the set and still call it complete.
    Enjoy! I know I am.

Hmm, not sure why it's so small...

Congratulation, but I have a question. If you just got the 1858, why is it one of the 3 you are still missing?

    Congrats Snaz.

I'm not too strong on Canadian coins but do know that's a tough set to complete.

I own a few dozen common Canadian large cents myself. Cool coins.

    Keep us posted.

By that quote I meant that I still have major varietys to hunt down.
The 1859 has Wide 8's O/ 9 double punched 9's all kinds of stuff.
The 1891's have a load of varietys including large leaves, Small leaves, Large Dates, Small dates, and two different Obv head styles.
    The 1858 has a repunched 5 and 8 variety I still need.

Thanks Dan! Believe me I will. If anyone has been paying attention I've been updating you guys on this set for the last year and a half or so. haha.
I plan on informing you guys right til the end.
There are still coins like common dates that have stuff like "1899 Large 9 and small 9". Which I have, but there are many little varietys like that and I want 'em all. lol
I'll have to sit down and photograph all of them and share a link with you guys at some point. I'm also always looking for upgrades.
I'll always be upgrading something so I can't see me laying these down anytime soon.

Thats the last one I need to complete my set as well. I haven't done the varieties however. Sure dont see them at shows very often, and like you said when you do they are either really problem coins or very overpriced.

Is there a website that does a good job covering Canadian Large Cents? :D I see so much Canadian stuff and I know I've passed up a ton of good deals. :goofer:

    Ribbit :)

Great coin. I've been partial to Canadian Large Cents since the late 50's. Used to get them in dealer junk boxes back then for almost nothing.

Nice going! Are there any good books on Canadian large cents you could recommend? I'm also interested in the Upper Canada bank issues. PEI coins are cool, too.

Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive repunched 5 and 8 Jim! I betcha could cherry one of those pretty easily down there. Canadian stuff really isnt common knowledge for Americans.
But rest assured, if you cherry one I might know a buyer to take it off your hands if the price is right, ;)

I'm so sure about a website that specifys stuff like varietys or anything, but I'll shoot you an email soon.

Here is a link to a book by Pierre Charest, Highly respected up here.
That one tells you everything about all the variety for Canadian coins. Remember, you can download it for half price.

Very happy for you Snaz. I like the Canadian Large cent better than the US ones. Here is a picture of my only one. I got it for my set of World Coins of the year 1888. :hail: Traci

Great work Snaz. I too collect the Canadian Large Cents. I have close to 500 now. I am missing 2 of the 1891's and the 1896 far 6. I think I have the 1894 large 4. Has anyone seen a picture of one that we can compare to. Also a pic for the far 6.
Have been up grading them. Have most in xf or better now. A great series to complete. I am also working on the New Foundland series. Low mintages with great prices.

I recommend the Charlton Standard Catalog of Canadian Coins by W. K. Cross. It is quite complete and in its 63rd edition I think. It is much like the Red Book for US coins. I do not know of a book for only Canadian large cents & tokens but there may be one.

That, my friend, is a WHOLE NEW CAN OF WORMS. There are sooo many books on Canadian copper varietys.
    To list a few:

This isn't all of them, there ARE more, but I can't quite remember them.
