Why buy from the MINT?

I have just started back collecting with the hopes of getting my nieces and nephews interested and possibly Grand Children if I can the kids to get married and move out. LOL. So I was just wondering why buy from the mint instead of from dealers or online auctions. I purchased a 2009 proof quarter set for nephew that was born last week on ebay for under $10 shipping and all that was cheaper than the mint offering price. I was just curious. Thanks Kent

I've bought from the Mint as well as dealers. I usually get full proof and mint sets from the Mint, then when I want a sub-set, like the 2009 proof bronze cents I'll look to eBay or other sources.

You can find some deals now and then on Mint products, it's just a matter of preference. At coins shows, or coin shops you have the advantage of being able to see the coins in hand. With the quality problems others have been having with Mint products this one point can be important.

I know I brought this up in a previous thread, but make sure you aren't buying picked over proofs through online auctions. People have been known to pry open several proof sets, pick the best ones, and stick the rest in the remaining proof holders. They are then sold to unsuspecting customers, thinking they are buying a mint-sealed set. Just food for thought...

At $10 delivered I'll about guarantee he's getting a picked over set made upof coins that th seller felt wouldn't be worth grading. Doesn't mean that it will be a bad looking set, could be all PF-68's Still very pretty, but a PF-68 isn't worth spending the grading money on.

Very true. I just want people to be aware that this questionable practice is going on out there. It's not illegal, but it is misleading some people.

Thanks

I didn't even think about that I have never tried to open a set so I never thought about anyone else doing other than to send in a coin for grading not to change up the overall set. Thanks again Kent
