It’s Rare – can it possibly be real?

My old friend bought this for $40 from a dealer that doesn’t specialize in world material. According to the Krause catalog, it appears to be a rare coin. It certainly looks like a struck coin to me. It rings when you tap it & it has creamy luster. The edge lettering looks like it was applied properly to me. Do you think it is real?

It definitely looks fake when compared to the one OCOPR48 linked.

    share your opinion 100%

My friend (and I) also share your opinion 100%. It looks to good to be true. But darn-it, the coin looks so nice. I need to compare it very closely to a couple genuine coins.

This coin looks to be genuine to me. If you closely examine the link that Toad posted , you will see virtually the same die imperfections.

Directly dentils and hair. Between the G and the (1) of date. between the dentils and (1) of date (.) among others. If it is counterfeit it's a darn good one.

On the Rev: if you examine the area between the R of Regina and E you will notice a (.) at the middle serif line from E.

Fake. There is nothing that I see that's remotely close to the other pictures. The fonts are different, the head is different, the reverse is completely different, look at the dentals in relation to anything on the center of the coin, nothing matches up. The Star on the reverse is different.

You are correct Jim , I see that now. Thanks. The fonts are different. Thanks for pointing out my oversight.

So it's probably a novelty reproduction or a poor attempt to counterfeit.

I don't think there is any novelty to this fake. It probably came from China and was meant to defraud someone with out the knowledge of fakes, OR the support of all the members of CoinTalk. Our members will take the time and analyze a coin for its authenticity and state it openly, with facts to back it up.

Thanks everyone. The comparison to the two genuine pieces makes this coin piece look suspect. Without the comparison coins (or first hand knowledge of the type), you could assume this piece was a mint state government issue. I wish you could all hold it in your hands & see what I am seeing. The coin piece is a real work of art made by some real mint process & machinery. It has creamy luster of a relative early die state and razor sharp detail. The lettered edge is toning nicely like .900 silver. Thanks again for everyone's help.
