I have an epson perfection v100 photo scanner. At times, i have trouble scannign some notes. This includes most newer notes from England, the Euro zone and even the 2004 US $10 note. Most other notes are fine, only newer issues do i have troubles. When i go to scan the note, my scanner gets about 1/2 way done, and pops up a box telling me it is illegal to do so and to abort. then directs me to the rulesofuse website.
My next scanner, i want to get one i know wont give me such nonsense problems. It was suggested to use old technology to beat the new security, but i dont want to use a used scaner, it wont last very long. I would rather start with something new that works, and use it as long as possible.
So i called Epson today
I talked with a few folks from the tech support department. 1 guy told me that the scanner DOES NOT have any software built in that would prevent it from scanning notes. I asked him why it pops up with a 'scanner' dialog box telling me i cannot scan the note..
enters tech guy #2. He tells me the scanner does not have any built in security because how would the scanner know what it was scanning (is this guy for real, right?). He says the scanner cannot tell the difference between a piece of paper and a piece of money. I told him i can scan most world notes just fine, i only have problems with newer issues from England, most Euros, and the US 2004 $10 note. I told him the 'issue' was selective, and only with those notes no matter how many times i try, but will scan alot of other notes just fine.
Enters tech guy #3. The guy tells me the issue is most likely a defective driver issue. and that none of their scanners have any software to detect money that would prevent it from scanning money. I repeated that i can scan some notes, and only have issues with some newer notes. He didnt understand. I told him i am not getting an error from a printer malfuntion, that i was getting a direct response from the printer warnign me that i cannot continue with the current activity. I reassured him it was not a driver issue. I told him i wanted to buy a scanner that would do what i needed it to
at this point, i know i am probably being tracked by the FBI as a possible counterfeiter.. good thing i called from work

And i work for the Govt
soon after this .. tech guy #4 comes on... this guy had no answers as to why his scanner DOES have anti counterfeiting tech on it, and told me to buy the scanner i wanted, and if it didnt work, to return it for a credit. I asked - so if i buy this $700 scanner, and it doesnt work, i get my money back. He said no, i would get credit to use in the Epson store. I asked him why i would want a credit in their store, if none of their products worked the way i needed it to. I told him i would have to lok at other manufacturers to determine if they have a scanner that would work for me as it sounded like Epson didnt know what their product did. He gave me assurance i could go to any store, he suggested Best Buy. I told him i 'could' go to Best Buy as they sure did have alot of scanners out to look at. I asked him how i would test the scanners at best buy when none of them are hooked up to a computer. His response - "oh!"
besides.. can you really see a guy walking into best buy with a wad of foreing notes and ask the nearest store clerk - "yo! where are all your scanners that can scan this money for me??" granted i work with all the local sherrifs, and none of the local police would arrest me (for this) .. but still - do i want that hassel?
In the end, after nearly 30-45 minutes on the phone with epson, the only thing i left with was the understanding they havent any ideas what their product could do. And that my best resort was to actually try the local best buy
So if you see me.. daggarjon.. on the local 20/20 trying over and over to convince everyone i am not a korean counterfeiter and that i really am only trying to scan money for legal and authorized use... please call in to tell them i am right.. please
Oh, and if you do know of a new scanner i can buy that will not cause me issue... you could also tell us that... before i get arrested lol
thank you.. i do feel a little better now.
