    Hey everyone! :D

I had just picked this up and was hoping to get some information on it. Is it a Hard Times Token, or a Civil War Token? What date did they mint these, and who were minting these?

    Thanks! :thumb:

I've seen other CWT's with Trade & Commerce on them and I think this one is too but I'm not 100% sure. We have a member that knows these well so hopefully he'll hop in later and give us the skinny on it. :thumb:

But whatever it is, I likes! :eat:

    Ribbit :)

    Hi Ryan,
You have a Civil War token, id 259/445a, R3. The 259 die is the one with the ship. Neither of those dies were paired with any other dies. The only variety is a unique example that was struck in nickel. The R3 rarity indicates that 501 to 2000 are known to exist. The lower case "a" indicates copper as the metal used. Only for about 5% of Civil War token dies is the diesinker unknown, but this die pair is in that category. Hence, the time of issue is not known either, but the vast majority of cwts were issued in 1863, so if I were to guess at a year, that would be the one. Kanzinger's 2002 book listed values for this token at $20 in F/VF, $30 in XF and $45 in Unc.

Thanks, I really needed this! :D I probably over paid, but 501 to 2000 is a really low mintage number (in my perspective), so it's value is much higher to me in my personal collection opinion :D

    Thank you once again! :)

501 to 2000 is still fairly common with Civil War tokens. I think something like 70% of the 10,000+ varieties are in the 20 or less known populations, just to give some perspective.
