    4 Indian Head Cents...

I have 4 Indian Head Cents that my dad gave me many years back. I was just curious as their grades. Also, what they are worth. I saw an 1896 for $11 at the local coin shop and I have 2 1896's. Here are some pictures of them.

    1898 Indian Head Cent (Reverse)

1896 Indian Head Cent (Obverse) 1

1896 Indian Head Cent (Reverse) 1

1896 Indian Head Cent (Obverse) 2

    1899 Indian Head Cent (Obverse)

Usually, some of the word "Liberty" is visible on a VG indian head cent. The first 1896 cent comes the closest to VG but I think they are all G or less and worth about a $1.50 each. I'd look at them as the start of an indian head cent collection and go from there. Click here to enlarge

I'd have to agree. They appear to be good except the 96 #2. I'd grade that AG. $1.50 each would be about right for retail/purchase on these. Most dealers, if offered only these, would probably be in the .75 to 1.00 range.

I like the idea of using them to start your Indian Head Cent collection. Enjoy it and have. Perhaps that's what your Dad had in mind.

    1898 - G4 - $2.00
1896-1 - It looks like some portions of "LIBERTY" may be visible, if there are, I would call this one G6 - $2.00 (G4) / $2.25 (G6)
1896-2 - G4 - $2.00 (All lettering except "LIBERTY" is readable, so I would not call it AG)
1899 - these are pictures of the 1898 again (oops Click here to enlarge )

Iam in agreement with the monetary values listed for your coins,, with this added that sometimes the value of a coin go far beyond that which is measured in dollars and cents. If you know what I mean ?

These coins carry with them not only the history that they have survived but also the fact of your Father having owned them and adding a special form of history to them relevant only to you perhaps but history none the less.

I accidentally linked my 1899 picture to my 1898 coin. Thanks for pointing that out susanlynn9.

I fixed it Click here to enlarge

Please let me know what the 1899 grades. It is in the best condition out of all of them but is also the dirtiest.

Also, is there a way to have the pictures show up in the thread instead of linking to them?

The 1896 is the oldest coin in my collection.

I see the 1899 as having G4 details but net AG3 because of the pitting in the obverse design.

Although you can insert you pictures directly in to the thread, I find that I prefer the links as they take up less room and make it easier to read the posts. JMO

    Indian Grades

    Hi Everyone,

I feel that one should never use a hard and fast rule when grading. The books say you have to have some letters of Liberty showing before you can call it a VG. Remember that this is a GUIDE book. One needs to examine the entire coin using all the grading points.

One of these coins are damaged badly. No grade. Some show a VG grade but don't show the letters. Another is actually a good.
