How did this one not get spotted, it's a major one. Check out the reverse...see the dimple. Pretty cool. Found it roll searchin' today.
That's a MAJOR cud. Very cool. You don't even need to be a coin collector to know something is different about that coin so it is amazing it was not plucked out of circulation long before you found it. The unstruck area of the reverse coincides with the obverse cud. That is a good indication it is genuine. There was no pressure on the coin at the cud so that area of the reverse did not strike up.
My thoughts exactly. Treasure hinting is fun. One day I hope to find something like a 1983 ddr or ddo 1995. Or even one of the wide AM's.
I'd say it did get spotted. For one thing you did spot it. And considering the grade that 39 year old coin is, it was pulled out of circulation years ago as well and has spent most of it's life in a hoard or jar somewhere and was recently been dumped back into circulation by someone who didn't know it was there
searching for the CUD Dear grnwavdav, I know precisely how you felt finding the LC-69S-04 while searching through cents. I did precisely the same thing 38 years ago. I found the LC-69S-04 while searching through rolls after school. I took the cent to my friend the coin dealer (at the Topanga Plaza Shopping Mall) & he offered me $8. I didn't sell it in 1970 & I still have it today. I have been collecting error coins since that date. Obviously, the example you found is absolutely awesome. (I think that if I ever found one again I would probably die from the shock). EDITED--Sorry but no offers to buy/sell/trade.
So is there a list of known cud? Sorry collect89 I'll be keeping this one. Error coins are really appealing to me. But I'm glad to know a fellow errorist.
cud books available There are two CUD reference books in my library that list the LC-69S-04. The first is called "The Design Cud" by Paul Marvin and Arnold Margolis. I think that it was printed in 1979. The second is called "The Cud Book" by Sam Thurman & Arnold Margolis. It includes additional cud listings up to about 1996. There is also a photographic record of Sam Thurman's personal cud collection which is pretty neat. You could probably order these reference materials from the ANA or Jim's Coins in Madison Wisconsin or Arnies Error Supermarket in Oceanside NY. I just purchased a Franklin half with a cud in Baltimore. I will post a scan when I return to the office on Thursday. Very best regards, collect89
Congrats! That is an awesome Cud and to have such an Error that is noted in the books is even more awesome! Considering the amount of 1969-S Lincoln Cents that I have searched, owned and still own, one would hope to have found at least one of these to add to my Error Coin Collection. Frank
Hello Frank, While you are searching your 1969 cents, keep a sharp eye out for the 69S double die obverse. There was one for sale in Baltimore (in a MS63 brown holder) for $41,000. Very best regards, collect89
Franklin Cud Hello grnwavdav, This is the Franklin half dollar I picked-up in Baltimore. It is the largest (and only) cud I have personally seen on a Franklin. Please let me know if you know of any others. Very best regards, collect89
collect89, That is the reason I purchased all of the 1969-S Cent rolls! The 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse Cent at the Baltimore Coin Show could not have been the true Big One (Die #1)! A true 1969-S DDO #1 in MS-63 Brown should fetch a price above $75,000 and possibly approaching $100,000 at Auction! I would bet that it was a lesser Doubled Die but if it was noted as a Double Die instead of Doubled Die, then it was probably one of the stronger Machine Doubled strikes that are often marketed that way to confuse buyers. I have lots of these, some stronger than others that I could sell for big money on eBay in the same way but I have not done so, as that would be dishonest. Frank
81k$ Ddo Hello Frank, Forgive the error. My brain said 41K but you made me think about it & it was probably 81K. It was a lot of Ks and it may still be available from the Baltimore ANA dealer. The dealer's booth was labeled JMS Coins which I mistakenly thought might be Jim’s coins of Madison WI until I saw James Sego there. I believe Mr. Sego's phone number is 630-701-8801 in case you want to buy the doubled die 69S. My friend Mike purchased a 1961 proof DDR from Mr. Sego at the show. Let’s say that my friend beat me to it fair & square. Very best regards, collect89
