My Mood: | hone your grading skills -- draped bust large cent
Here's my newest purchase, destined for the Dansco 7070.
Please assign a grade to it. It's raw, so there's no right or wrong answers. So this time please try and assign a value to the coin as well (i.e. how much would YOU pay for the coin).
Bonus points for indentifying the variety.
As always, comments both good and bad are most welcomed.
Have fun...Mike

VG-10 S-273 1807/6. Very nice coin - I have to do some research when I get home from work for price.

VG-8 1807/6. It has some eye appeal that way, so I'd probably price it in the $90 range.

Okay - I will stick with my grade since to me it looks more like weak strike versus wear and put the price around 125. Nice problem free coin.

She's got a few "issues", but nothing that bothers me at this grade/price.
Please keep the guesses coming -- you new guys most of all! Here's a chance to learn and discuss....Mike

Eac grade would probably be G 4 not enough detail in the hair to warrant a 8 or 10 , typical weak reverse. Still a very desireable coin and great photos of all the coins you have posted. |

Very nice detail in the hair, and can almost make out the drapery
Date and other lettering is bold, and very readable, I'd grade it VG8, and I'd say VG10 if I could read more of "AMERICA" or could even see "OF"
Now I know nothing of attributions for large cents, and don't know what all the number/letter combos really mean, as large cents, are not my thing. You've got a nice one, and assuming yours isn't an R-5 coin or anything really special, I might pay around $85

I vote VG8. Price? I've never owned one, so I vote "don't know."

Ok, here is my amateur analysis.
Technical grade: VG-8
Net grade due to weak strike -2 points: G-6
Net Net grade due to pleasing original/noncorroded surfaces(rare for a dbc) +2 points: back to VG-8. So all in all, it should sell for VG money, around $75-$100.
nice coin btw.

Said another way, there will always be debate on subjective grades, but there's little to argue when it comes to objective prices.

Unfortunately most people don't think about it that way. Nor should they, for a coin's grade and its value are 2 different things.

my opinion on this coin would be about a G6. The price that I would pay for it would be in the $60 range, I'm not saying that's what it is actually worth. That's just how much I would throw down for it.

I know nothing about varieties on this series but as far as grade I like it in the vg range and it has serious eye appeal for the grade.
