New Scanner ( ho ho ho ) Pics pics pics

Man, why couldn't I have had a scanner when I previously sold proof sets.... They just look so flashy when using one. More photos on the way, hope nobody gets mad for me posting so many pics in one thread, but, if you have ever used a webcam to take pics, you would understand why this tickles me to death.

Ok, now I've ran into a problem... My file sizes are too big, any info would help on making it smaller, i've already cropped it, I even changed the quality to low low low....

Hi. Great scan! To reduce the size of the scan, the software you are using to crop your scans should have a resizing option somewhere. Some programs call it resample, others resizing, others, I don't know. Probably the HELP option could point you in the right direction. Usually, you can resize by percent or by number of pixels. This will reduce the size of your photo. Reducing the size may degrade the picture a little so try to save the original scan before reducing. That way, you can experiment with resizing. Also, there should be an option to change the scan size. Keep at it. Looks like you've got some good equipment.

Nice pics pennycase. There are a few programs out there that will allow you to reduce the file size without losing the actual size of the pics. Adobe makes a few low cost programs.

There are also some internet programs such as avatar capture that allow you to shrink file sizes.

When images are too big, it's usually one of the following:

1. The files are saved in a "lossless" file format like GIF or (shudder) BMP. These retain information about all the bits in the images and that makes them larger. BMP files in particular aren't compressed at all.

2. Even when stored in JPG format -- a "lossy" but more efficient compression scheme -- the quality is cranked up too high. As you approach 100% quality in a JPG, you get close to the size of a GIF file, for example. Usually for a good picture you can reduce the quality to about 70-75% and reduce the size of the file by a factor of anywhere from 3 to 10 times. (That is, a 100K file at 100% quality may be about 10-30K with 70% quality.) That's almost always good enough for online imaging.

As far as imaging programs, I have a Mac so I love Graphic Converter (which is a Mac-based program). It does 95% of the common things Photoshop can do, and it's shareware for about 40 bucks. The developer is constantly improving it and the upgrade policies for registered users have always been very generous.

Could you make the picture any bigger, Jimmy? I just love the wide threads, that make me have to scroll back and forth in order to read them.

Good example of a common problem with scanners - insufficient depth of field to get a crisp picture of encapsulated coins. The HP combination printer-scanner-copier seems to be one of very few that will focus nicely on a subject removed a bit from the glass.

I'm using an Hp Scanjet 3970... I think I have it down now though, on how to get everything just right, cropping, resizing etc... And I worked out another kink that came up, it was saving the pictures to a type of file that didn't work..... Finally got it to save to a .gif fille... I just got done taking pictures of my entire collection, copying it to 2 cd's, that i'll put in two differant places just in case something happens. Thanks for the help guys.... Now I just wish that I had some of my toners that I could show off.. Sadly enough they are in a sealed up box, which will be shipped out monday or tuesday.
