| Great find at the coin shop today!
Well,
I made the boss happy today at the coin shop. Think he may just want to keep me around a bit more.
He brought me in to help him catch up on organizing and every time he thinks there's nothing to do believe me I FIND something.
Anyway, yesterday toward closing he bought a bunch of junk silver. LOTS of dimes so I ran them through the counter. Some BU Roosevelts and a smattering of Mercs. Almost 1000 dimes total and I told him I'd like to get a better look at them when I came in today as I thought some of mercs looked older and a few looked BU.
Normally, these would go into a bucket but it was slow this morning so I started looking closer. Well I DID find a few BU Mercs, 2 1931-D, a 26-S and some decent 16-S.
Did I forget to mention the 16-D? YES A 1916-D!!!
I had a regular customer look at it before I showed him to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.
Obverse is full G4. Reverse has weak rims but a strong mintmark. AG3+ no problem and bought as junk silver.
This stuff is usually just "spot checked" as anyone in a busy shop can tell you. He NEVER has time to check but I had a good feeling. He's very glad I did. Still it freaked me out when I flipped that coin over and saw the D mintark.
Now understand that he hired me to help organize but I think I'm making a strong point for keeping me around.
Kind of tooting my own horn here but I dig deeper than he does because I just plain get bored at times. I have pulled several pieces of "junk' out and told him to put them on ebay. He has gotten 2 or 3 times more for them this way.
He's also been having me choose Silver Eagles to send in for grading. Honestly don't care for this but do it anyway.
A few weeks ago he bought 10 of the 2008 reverse of 2007 mules. Told me to pick the nicest five.
He got word today. One got an MS69. FOUR got MS70 from NGC!
Yes, he had a pretty good day I'd say. Mine wasn't too shabby either!

| Sounds like he just never looked. Wonder how many times that could have happened had he had the time to look at each coin?

Great finds there Clembo. I wish I had a hobby/job that I could enjoy so much. I just have a job I like. and a hobby I like, separately.
Did AJ say he'd pay 20X face for that '16D? If he gets it for that he should pay your air fare and all expenses while you are on vacation in AZ.
And while you're there--live it up!!!

It says a lot that you can make a find like that and not pocket it for yourself... that coin has to be worth at least $1000. I think you'll boss will be keeping you around for a long time!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Especially the honesty part.
I could have pocketed this coin in a heartbeat and no one would have known but me. Not worth it.
He gave me an opportunity when I really needed one and that was a sheer coincidence. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
The 16-D was sent off to NGC today. I think AG3 only because of the reverse being so worn. Who knows though may get a G4.
Will llet you all know when it gets back.
