Trivia: Millennium Coins Part 15 Romance Countries

"Romance Language" Countries of Europe take precendence in this week's Trivia. Andorra, Monaco, Portugal, San Marino, Sardinia, Spain, Switzerland and Yugoslavia.

ANDORRA:

Andorra produced (25,000) silver (.4624 oz. ASW) 25,000 Proof

Five Diners

A Millennium tribute to "2000 years of Christianity." No photo, but coin bears the National Arms of Andorra on obverse while nativity scene reverently adorns reverse.

The only other coins authorized by Andorra in 2000 were/are four silver (.7435 oz. ASW)

20 Diners


6,000 each were struck. No photos, but all commemorate the JOCS 2000 Olympics. All four coins obverses bear a Crowned National Arms, date and denomination.

Coin 1's reverse has Olympic's interlocking rings displayed so the top center ring encircles Center of coin with two partial rings interlocked at 5:00 and 7:00 and two other partial rings (not interlocked) placed at 3:00 and 9:00 (all 4 coins have this display). At the top of the reverse of all 4 coins is text, which reads from 11:00 to 1:00 "XXVII JOCS OLIMPICS" and between the center ring and the previous text is the date "2000." Placed in the very center of Coin 1's reverse is a hurdler on gold inlay.

Coin 2: runner on gold inlay.

Coin 3: long jumper on gold inlay.

Coin 4: pole vaulter on gold inlay.


MONACO:

Only one coin was authorized by Monaco in 2000. The coin may not be dated 2000, but is indicative of the type.

There is no photo of a 36mm coin Commemorating "Terra Do Lavrado." The obverse bears the National Arms, Compass, etc. Reverse has "Labrador Coast and Ship." This coin exists in other metals:

3rd metal (.8016 oz. AGW)

The coin in our next photo is of a 200 Escudos commemorating "Terra Dos Corte - Real." Four metal compositions exist.

(No photo) commemorates "Presidency of the European Union" with Cave Drawings and Portugal's National Arms on obverse and "Stylized Design" on reverse.

SAN MARINO

San Marino mints its own coins, but italian and Vatican coins circulate too.

A 10 Lire (23.3mm) Aluminum coin (no photo) was struck with a theme of Love. "Child of the Universe" adorns obverse while reverse bears "A Child on Flower on Star."

A 20 Lire (21.6mm) Aluminum-Bronze coin (no photo) was minted with "Solidarity" as its theme. Obv: "Child of the Universe." Rev: "Two Hands About to Grasp."

Fifty 1 Lire Coins (19.2mm Copper-Nickel) were struck with "Equality" as theme. Obv. "Child of the Universe". Reverse: "5 Different Plant Leaves on One Stem." No photo.

A (no photo) 22mm Copper-Nickel 100 Lire coin with "Ecology" as theme was minted with "Child of the Universe" on obverse and reverse bearing "Leaf on House on Leaf."

A (no photo) 24mm Aluminum-Bronze 200 Lire "Knowledge" themed coin has "Child of the Universe" on obverse and an "Allegorial Female" on reverse.

A NCLT (no photo) Bi-metallic 500 Lira coin whose theme is " Work" has "Child of the Universe" on obverse and "Spinning Wheel" on reverse.

Here's a 1000 Lira coin (Bi-metallic )Copper-Nickel Center in a Aluminum-Bronze Ring). Theme: "Liberty":

In 2000 San Marino issued two Silver (.4832 oz. ASW) coins.(no photos):

1st theme: "Peace." Rev. "Hawk and Dove with Same Olive Branch in Beak."

2nd theme: "1st Holy Year Jubilee." Rev. "Pope Boniface VIII with 2 Aides."

Three Silver (.5907 oz. ASW) 34mm 10,000 Lire Coins were struck. (no photos)

1st theme: "17th Centennial of the Republic." Obv. COFTU. Rev. Saint Marino’s Portrait.

2nd theme: "Holy Year." Obv. Crowned Arms. Rev. "Pope Kneeling Before an Open Door."

3rd theme: "Michaelangelo’s Sacred Family Painting." Rev. Painting.

A Gold (.1867 oz. AGW) 2 Scudi was minted. Theme: "Madonna Della Melagrna. Rev: "Madonna and Child."

San Marino’s 2000 coinage closes with a Five Scudi Gold (5 oz. AGW) Proof (4,500 minted). Theme is/was "Tiziano’s Painting - Rape of Europa." Rev. "Europa Riding on a Bull’s (Zeus’) Back."

2nd commemorates "Printing." Obverse: "Carlos I." Reverse: "Antique Printing Press."

Two silver commemorative (2000 Pesetas) were struck.

The Berne Mint Struck 2 Silver (.5639 oz. ASW) 20 Francs Commemoratives (32.7mm) (No photos):

One Coin (100,000 business strikes and 15,000 proofs) commemorates "New Millennium." Obverse: A large Olive Branch in the center with stem pointing at 5:00 and its top leaf pointing to 11:00. Two words stacked below each other. First word (ANNO) reading from 12:00 to right. Other word (DOMINI) sits above the date. Below Olive Branch is legend: "HELVETIA." Beneath that is the Denomination "FR 20."Reverse: An Angel with extended wings takes up two-thirds of the coin. To the right of the Angel are three words in a center-stack (PAX IN TERRE). Below the words are four peoplewho seem to be paying attention to the Angel.

The other Coin (2,500 proofs) also commemorates the "Millennium" as a Tribute to "2000 Years after Christ." Obverse: Text reads down Center of coin ( large text) "ET LUX" "IN TENEBRIT" "LUCI" ) (small Text ("ANNO DOMINI" "2000") Medium Text ("HELVETIA") and Large Text ("FR 20") Reverse: Jesus in two-thirds of the coin preaching to people in the right lower corner and the stacked words "LUMEN" "CHRISTI" in upper right corner.

Berne, also, minted a gold (28mm .6534 oz. AGW) Commemorative "to the Millennium" Coin. Obverse: In small letters one row of text reads from 9:00 to 3:00, "HELVETIA 2000." At 12:00 are giant stretched letters: "FR." At 6:00 is a giant stretched number : "100." Reverse: Running from 7:00 to 5:00 along rim are the words: "ANNO DOMINI JESU CHRISTI" as read from center of coin. At 6:00, reading from the rim of the coin, is the number "2000." In the very center of the reverse is a stylized baby.

Hope you enjoyed Year 2000 coins minted and/or authorized by the "Romantic Countries of Europe."

What about Romania? Romanian is a romance language too (though often gets omitted from the list).

Speaking of which, what about Italy and France?
