not very good with grading but i would guess VG-8 and the value $15-$17. thats just the ballpark price not actual. cool looking coin! looks kindof dirty but still neat.

I'd say VG but it looks like it is also corroded. That's the 13-Star variety. Grey Sheet is $28 in VG, $22 in G and $18 in AG.

Fine details, corroded, net VG. Worth about $20.
Regardless, to think you have in your hand a coin that's almost 200 years old for only $20 seems worth it to me!
Have fun...Mike
p.s. I believe that's a N-7 (a R-3 variety), one of the "mouse" varieties (the "large mouse", IIRC), so called because of the "mouselike" die crumbling just above Liberty's hair and below star #8 (counting clockwise from the left of the date). Check the reverse die, and look for a "doublewide" dentil just above the letter N in UNITED to be sure. Here's an auction to compare your coin to: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item...0&Lot_No=19714
It might also be an N-8 here: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item...44&Lot_No=6121

Nice coin and I agree F- details, but I am thinking N-8. To me it looks like the 817 has more separation than I see in the N-7 examples. Of course it could be the angle of the picture. In this case you can also see examples on http://www.coinfacts.com. Or post some pictures looking straight down on the coin.

Mark, I flip flopped twice already. The space between the 1 in the date and the first star was the final straw leaning me towards N-7. I'd love to see larger photos to be sure.

I think I got a deal on it: $12! In 1917 I bet people were saying 'wow' about this coins age! pretty awsome. we figured out my great, great, great, great grandpa coulda spent this coin.

VF details, severely corroded, net G.
Still, for only $12 I'd say you didn't do too bad.

If you look at coin facts you will see on the N-7 that the 817 on the date is close and on the n-8 the 81 is close while the 1 and 7 are farther from the 81. Still a nice coin!
