I bought an Epson scanner about 6 months ago. after using it for 3 days

, it broke... making tons of noise i think caused by the 'chain' or whatever its called the controlls the light bar. so i get lots of noise, and dragged images.

SO - i sent it off to get fixed (after a few months because i was a wee-bit upset it borke after 3 days). After sending it out tio be fixed, it took a month to get back.

Now, when i was at the repair shop, i asked the guy abouth the scanner. He told me it was a light suty scanner (fair enough) and that its best used for only about an hour at a stretch and then let sit for a while to cool down.

SO - i get the 'fixed scanner home, and try it out.. after 1/2 hour, it starts making the noise again. So, i call ti quits for the night.. thinking i will pick it up the following night, let the machien cool down. Well, its bee a week, and still makes the noise. So i will call the repair shop tommorow

, and possibly send it off to get 'repaired' once more. heck, it has a year warranty .. i figure at this rate, after the year is up .. i 'might' get 7 days of workign order out of it!!!

So - heres the question for all you scanning folks out there...
WHAT DO YOU USE??
Clembo? you scan tons fo stuff! what do you use that stands up to it?

Rotobeast.. i noticed you scanned tons of stuff tonight (nice coins BTW)...so what do you use that works?

i think in reality your notes are worn just like mine and that its your high powered scanner that makes look so crisp

I am just getting a bit tired of these chinsey scanners not working for crap! I cant spend $400 on a scanner that will allow me to scan 4,000 items in an hour. I just need a decent scanner for home thatalows me to do my hobby thing and allow me to scan

I use a $150 Samsung digital camera that I got at WalMart.

Well,

From what you've said I'd stay away from Epson.

I've had three scanners now and all have been used a lot. All HPs.

Now I'm using an HPScanjet 4370.

My research into this - none.

My last broke down (after a few years) and I was fuming so much my wife left the house and bought one to shut me up. This is what she got and it does a pretty good job. Cost was around $100.

I'm not a direction reader. I just play with them till I figure it out for the most part.

Maybe you should consider and HP?

OK First things first. When you talk about a repair shop,----->>>>> do you live in Mayberry? What in the heck repair shop are you going to?

As an IT guy, my advice to you is to go to Walmart and get the cheapest Printer/Scanner/Copier you can buy - usually less than $50. I got me a HP F300 serieies that cost about $40 at Walmart - no problems so far.

If you want fancy scanning, then look elsewhere

I have used HP prior to this Epson. I had an HP PSC 1610 All-in-one scanner, copier, faxed, dishwasher, snow shveler ... errr... I had that one for about a year before deciding to build a website and do alot of scanning. After about a week of scanning notes, it borke as well. I dont remeber exaclty what it was doing .. but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I have never really had a problem with HP, but havent done alot of business with them since they were bought by Ciompaq (or did they buy compaq) I was looking at an HP scanner last night .. but was hesitent. The one thing i did like about the Epson over the last HPi had, was the Epson had this feature that was like batch scanning - i place 8 coins onthe scanner, and it could scan them seperately for 8 different files. Alot less photoshop editing for me. I am sure most if not all newer scanners will do this , it was a neat feature!!!

Pocket Change, i spent $100+ on this epson (i think there was a mail in rebate as well, but dont remember) and it is bsically junk. It is possible i just got a bad device, but they wont replace it until they fix if for the 3rd time or somethign like that. The repair shop is called Bob Brooks Computer Sales in either Auburn Hills Michigan. But it is the ONLY authorized repair shop in my area for Epson. kinda sucks!

I'm starting to think you got the "lemon" of the batch Daggarjon.

I will NEVER buy a multi purpose scanner, fax, dishwasher etc. for one simple reason. If ONE feature breaks down you lose ALL of them till it's fixed.

I'd rather lose my stuff one piece at a time.

As Clembo said: that is the same reason I would never buy a TV with a recorder built in.
Same with a Microwave & a stove.

But, I would buy a refrigerator with a coin changer built in, just to check the chnage (if it existed).

As some of ya'll know I have my own business doing memorial DVD's for a local funeral home. Sometimes I'll be scaning over 100 photos at a time and I've never had a problem.

That's wierd - I used to have a Epson all in one scanner too and I used it to scan perhaps 300 pages at one go (yes, I'm not joking) when I was very free. I used it to scan numismatic books though - not coins.

Daggerjon, did you use your warranty for it? I find it wierd that if it breaks down within 3 days, usually you would get a new one and most definately if they can't fix it after two times, you should get a new one for free. (unless Epson has a different policy in your country)

Daggarjon, I have a hp psc 1350v all in one, http://www.shopping.com/xPF-PSC-1350v I've had it since late 03 early 04 and has worked fine. Since day 1 when scanning it makes noise but believe it's suppossed to do that. The other funtions has also worked well. It cost $150.00.

Like some of the other CT's I am hesitant to buy all in one things, but sometimes it just not feesible to buy the individually.

the Epson i have notw is not an all in one, it strictly does scanning, and yes, the repair shop i am dealing with is 'repairing' under warranty.

The HP all -in-one i got, the scanner wont work, but the printing/copier still does.

i will post what i am told after calling the repair shop today ... i am interested in waht they tell me

Daggerjon, I'm actually quite perplexed - the scanners in all-in-one are usually of much cheaper quality and it's more likely that such machines break down more often. I guess yours happened to be one of those bad batches - hopefully you will get a new one instead.

Your gonna spend more on gas going back and forth than a new scanner would cost. Go to Microcenter which is at 14 Mile and I75 and get an HP. Just a few miles from you.

This is from a guy who owns an IT company not far from you. NO I dont own Microcenter. : )

well i talked to the repair guys, and they told me to bring it back in. I asked several questions as to why bringing it back in would 'fix' it when it broke 2 hours after i picked it back up. He told me they took it all aprt, fixed what Epson said to fix, reassembled it, and it did scan fine for them. He said if the same exact issue has arisen, that Epson might just swap out the scanner for a new one (by new, he meant refurbished). I asked hom if the new one they might give me would have the same problems, and if i should just cut my losses and by a new scanner. Basically i was trying to ask him what he sees with these machines,if they fail often, and then asked him if he thinks i just got a lemmon, and that a newer one from Epson would give me better luck. In the end, he said i probably have a lemon or possibly a bad batch, but he couldnt say for certain.

SO ... now i have to take it back to the repair shop - they are only open late 1 day a week, so if i miss that day, i have to wait another week. and no, they are not open weekened

Jim, i usually use Newegg.com for my purchases, 95%+ of the time, they are cheaper then anybody. There are times they are not the cheapest, but i have done so much business with them ... plus they have an excellent return policy (usually .. i did contact them about returning the scanner .. they told me i had to deal with the manufacurer. If, however, i do end up buying a new scanner, i might look into micorcenter.. see what they got.

I am not sure if i want to go to HP again just yeat, not after that last HP. But as somone said - the all-in-ones usually are the best for any one thing! So i dont know. I might try the Visioneer, if not possibly an HP. One thing is for sure - NO EPSONS!

Scanners mostly create poor representations of coins. Go with a digital camera, and ask for tips on taking pictures.
