I decided to go to the coin shop today and picked up a bottle of this stuff. I decided to experiment on a buffalo nickel I found in a roll a few weeks back.I was pretty impressed with the results. I put tape on the parts where I didn't want the date restorer to hit. I would recommend this product to whomever has a pile of these nickels sitting around. Why not make a nic-a-date collection? Its kind of fun to see what sort of date pops up.

Was there any in the first place? I see others carving these things with Mohawks and hats . Whats wrong with bringing out the date

There's nothing wrong with bringing out the date. Dateless buffalo are only good for jewelry in my opinion. I have a friend that's been restoring dates on Buffalo's and using them as fillers in his collection.

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

I use it all the time, I only put the smallest of drop on the last 2 digits to avoid the blotch.

i've heard if you put those in vingar, it dosn't have the acid ring around it. i have a 189? v nickel i want to do the test to. i had a friend look at it and he thought it said 1894! i'll do the test to see if it is.:hammer:

I tipically dont buy dateless coins, though I do have some sitting around. Where can I buy this, and how much will it cost?

Does anyone know what the active ingredient is that makes the date appear? I would also like to know how much this costs.

Never have used Nic-a-date but I personnally think a dated coin has to be worth more than a dateless coin anyday. Although the coin is forever damaged but again if it ain't got a date what difference does it make that it has no damage??

i have a dateless buffalo soaking right now in vingar. i've had it in there for 4 days know and the oval shaped thing that the date is on is starting to appear a little bit to the right. i can't wait to see what date it is! it also has an s mintmark. i agree, if you show someone a dateless coin, they don't think as it as being an old coin. if it has a date they will know and think it is cool. i'd rather have a date on a old worn buffalo than a no date any day. thats why i soak them in acid.:smile

I agree. If you put the entire coin in the stuff, then it will look even and bring out details on the reverse, like the horn.

I would do this, as well.

I think it would be fun doing this to dateless Buffs.

Hey, don't knock my mohawk nickels, lol, I make them at work when bored.

I have a cpl rolls of dateless buffalos I bought on ebay I plan on nic-a-dating just out of curiosity. Then I will mohawk them. You'll see them on Ebay soon enough.

Also called iron chloride. It’s an acid and oxidizer. I’ve used it to bring out the patterns in Damascus or folded steel knife blades.
