I am new at collecting coins other than lincoln pennies and state quarters. i have a Susan B. Anthony folder that has a space that reads 1979-P Near Date Also, there is a space reading 1979-S Proof Clear "S"... and Filled "S" What do these mean thx
I don't have an answer to your question, but you should be able to find it on coinfacts or in the red book. It does make me wonder though, WHO would put a proof coin unprotected into a carboard folder Ruben
One handy tip I picked up somewhere (maybe here) is to look at both the 9s. The distance between the bottom of the nines and the rim should equal the thickness of the number one. In other words, if you turn the number one sideways it should just fit between the nine and the rim. That is a wide rim near date 1979 coin. Hope this helps.
Lord, The filled S refers to the S being indistinct, as if there is an excess of metal in the S mint mark (also known as Type I), the clear S should be clearly distinct (Type II). Here's a picture of a filled S, that I own. The monetary difference, according to 2007 redbook is $10.00 for the filled, $125.00 for the clear S
Here is another picture that might help http://home.earthlink.net/~smalldollars/dollar/page29.html I hope this helps. Bruce.
