Ordered a $500 box of half dollars from my local bank. I've been wanting to try this so I bit the bullet. They charged me $5 fee. (is that normal?) The box came from the fed a few days later. Into the second roll out pops a 1944 walker!!! I couldn't believe me eyes. This is the first silver I have ever found in the wild after many years of searching pocket change. Roll 22 I hit a 1964. Roll 42 I hit another 64 (nice looking) and also a 67. Silv is a happy hunter ;)

I wanted to ask a question about finding ms coins in these rolls. But will post separately because I want to make sure the photo upload is working.

    Nice! Beginner's luck, I guess... :D

Some banks try to charge a fee, but they really shouldn't. You should try to find a different bank without a fee. But, if all your boxes are like that, then by all means pay that fee!

And these are the nicest condition coins found in the $500 box. But since they were found "in circulation" does that make them at best like AU-58? I don't know if you can tell from the photos but could any of these be MS? If any in particular look uncirculated I can try to post more detailed photos.

I don't know where to look for wear on Kennedys, but I can say that just because a coin was found "in circulation" does not necessarily mean that it has a circulated grade. You could find a coin in your pocket that you got back in change from McDonalds that could be Mint State. Congrats on your finds!

Ok thanks for clarification on the holy ms grade. I will have to research how to find the wear spots I guess. Seems to me that some of them might be 61/62 at least.

No $5 fee next time then! That's just eating into my silvers.

Nice finds! I'm not sure if you know this, but all Kennedy's from 2002- the present aren't intended for circulation and are only sold by the mint. They may be worth a premium to some collectors.

Thanks roll searcher, actually being somewhat new to this I did not know that 2002+ were sold only by the mint. I will hang onto these.

So were 1987's and any proof coins. Do you know about proofs?

Some banks try to charge a fee, but I'd just go to another back if that was the case. You'll lose money in the long run if you pay fees. Heck, I don't even drive to go pick up my coins.

When I went through the halves I looked for 1970s and earlier, as well as for 74-D DDO, for any 'S' mint proof coins, and for any lustrous AU or better coins. I didn't specifically search for 1987 or 2002+ coins but luckily I found a couple nice ones. Next box I will search smarter, and hopefully faster. What else do y'all search for in halves? Thanks for the tips!

I think you and I are in the same boat. I finally pulled the trigger and ordered my first $500 box of halves today. Should have it next week. My big dilemma is where to return them. I know to not drop them at this branch. Should I just drop them at another branch of the bank where I have an account, or should I open an account at a different bank to dump them? I really don't have anywhere around here that has a coin counting machine that doesn't charge a fee.

"No FG" halves, an error coin that leaves off the FG of the designer's initials on the reverse. I'm not sure of the exact dates.

I also believe there are more doubled dies, but again I'm not sure of the dates.

I'm not sure if they accept halves, but when I search pennies, I take them back to the Coinstar machine and get an Amazon.com gift card. They wave the fee, and there's always something I need that I can order on Amazon. Heck, they even have groceries. The also offer the same deal on some other places' gift cards too - Lowes, etc - if you have a project coming up.

If they weren't halves, I'd consider it, but I really don't need a $500 credit on amazon... LOL! I have done that with my loose change though...I agree that a balance on Amazon is always nice.

Ahh thanks will check this out.

Good luck Rassi! I will probably return to a different branch of the same bank as I believe some branches has counting machines. Seems wise to order and dump at different branches so employees don't get sick of me.

I'm curious, when people look for hand rolled coins in bank branches, do you just ask any teller what they have available at the moment? Or do you ask to sit with a manager or?

That's awesome beginners luck. I've searched 4 boxes of halves and 3 boxes of dimes and have 2 '64 dimes to show. I need a deeper search pool apparently. I know it's pretty thin out there, I guess I was naive and hoping for .5/box average.:headbang:

To make some of you feel better about my beginners luck, I went back to the bank and took all the halves they had (about 25 yellow/white paper rolls) and didn't find any silver :so-sad: but found 4 MS NIFC keepers including a shiny 2012... thought that was cool at least!

That's an awesome first role hunt. I ordered just a $100 worth that I'll pick up tomorrow. It's a shot in the dark but there's always the possibility of a variety or silver for sure. Nice find! :thumb:
