2013 gold buffalo proof and reverse proof set!

The US Mint is considering a set of gold buffalo proof and reverse proof coins according to the survey that I just did. It'd cost ~4,000 USD. They are also considering the design change whether only for this occasion marking the 100 anniversary of James E. Fraser or for the next on-going buffalo gold series. I responded only for the former. I am definitely getting at least a set - it's time to save some money folk!

    Open quote:

The American Buffalo 24K Gold Coin's obverse and reverse designs feature images by noted American sculptor James Earle Fraser. The designs were originally featured on the popular "Indian Head," or "Buffalo Nickel" which was introduced in 1913 to showcase the native beauty of the American West.

2013 is the 100th Anniversary of the James Earle Fraser design on the American Buffalo 24K Gold Coin. In celebration, the United States Mint is considering introducing a two-coin standard proof and reverse proof set, which would not be minted to demand but would be minted in quantities sufficient so that most people who currently purchase American Buffalo coins would have the opportunity to buy the set. (A reverse proof coin consists of reversing the mirror-like background finish of a traditional proof coin, and applying it to the design elements of the coin to achieve a unique contrast.) In addition, the standard American Buffalo proof coin would be minted to demand.

The price of the 100th Anniversary American Buffalo two-coin standard proof and reverse proof set will be approximately $4,000.

The price of the standard American Buffalo proof coin will be approximately $2,000.

Note: Pricing for gold coin products is tied to the market price for an ounce of gold and can vary dependent upon changes in the market value (based on the London Fix).

Isn't it what the gold buffalo 'hoarders' always have wanted? ;-)

I'm thinking that they won't mint enough to meet demand. Be sure to order early.

Will do that for sure ;-)
In the survey, they also ask whether US Mint should have a fixed mintage between 15,000 and 30,000 or using the sale mode for the SF 2-coin set for a period of time or mintage to demand. I opted for the sale mode as for the SF 2-coin set. I think in this way, any collector, who wants to have at least a set, will be given enough time to order. At the same time, it could prevent dealers from monopolizing all the sets.

I know you'd love to hear the news ... that's why I created this thread ;-)

ps: not sure about the silver buffalo - it wasn't in the survey - I think gold buffalo proof and reverse proof set is good enough for now ;-)

    This is fascinating.

I got a survey, too -- but mine was proposing a reverse proof Buffalo that would replace the standard issue, at a price of about $2000, and never discussed the option of offering both together for $4000. I pointed out in the comments section that offering only a reverse proof sounded like a terrible idea, recalling the debacle with 2009 ASE proofs, or even the 1982/83 mint sets.

The survey also asked whether I thought fractional uncirculated or proof Buffs would be a good idea. I said yes -- more accessible to more collectors.

Finally, it asked a lot of questions about whether a special issue should keep the same design on the obverse and/or reverse, and if not, what design should be used -- another classic design, a new modern design, or something else. For the heck of it, I asked them to consider using classic pattern designs that were never issued for circulation, but I also indicated that I didn't have a particular preference among the alternatives.

I gather that different people will be seeing drastically different surveys. I wonder if one's answers early on determine what questions appear later, or if they just randomly ask people different sets of questions.

Fractionals, yeah: send 'em! RP only available in a 2 oz set, ugh...or did I read that wrong? That would really separate the men from the...um, from those who can't cough up $4k on a single release  If that's what it is to be, enjoy...and please post pics!

Wasn't there fractional buffalos in the first year of issue? I would love to get a golden buffalo, but the 1 oz coins are way out of my price range. A 1/10 size coin would be ideal for me.

2008 was the year of the fractionals. 2006 was the first year of issue.

Ah, thank you. At any rate, I wish the Mint would release fractionals, as I would love to get some at a decent price (I believe those 2008s go for a bit of a premium).

I got this survey in an email today and filled it out. I put a comment in that to accompany the 100 anniversary set, perhaps they should do one on a smaller scale, i.e. proof and reverse 1/10oz set. I would love to have the proposed $4k set, but no way do I have the money for something like that. Now if they offered two 1/10oz coins, I could do that.

I think 1/10 Gold Buffalos would be very cool, I have a few of the 5 dollar gold eagles and like them very much. If I'm not mistaken the Buffalos are .999 gold so that would be especially neat looking and more pure than the 91.67% Eagles.

I'd like to have a 1/4 oz. buff - about the same size as a nickel :)

That reverse proof is going to be gorgeous. 4k is basically more than my coin budget for an entire year, so I'd very much like to see fractionals. Won't be as amazing as the one ouncers, but good enough and cheap enough for me.

I did say 'definitely' for fractional as well. I think it will be a hit. I hope that US Mint will do the ordering system like the 2-coin SF set - within a time frame of 4 or 5 weeks. I think it's fair for the collectors and it will definitely NOT crash their site ...
