I found what I believe might be an error on a 1887 P Morgan. As you can see in the photo, there is a break between the "R" & "T" in Liberty. Can anyone give me some input about this? Thanks!

Die chip, a ding, or something other than an error. :thumb:

Could we see a full sized pic of the coin, to check for others "dings" ?

Wouldn't a die chip leave a raised area rather than a depression?

After looking closer, I noticed that there is a piece ofmetal coming off this area on about a 45 degree angle down and to the right, which, I think, would generally be called a die chip but it looks like it mayhave been removed from the location leading from the top of the "T"and down toward the "R". Is this common for a piece of metal to begouged out and then pressed back on the top of another part of the coin? I alsonoticed that there appears to have been something that gouged into the"R" pushing metal aside as it went into the "R".

I think it is PMD. When a coin is "dinged" the removed metal has to go some place. The raised area at the top of the R and T (right above where they connect) looks like displaced metal rather than a die chip. Having said that, I am no expert so you may want to wait for someone else to weigh in on my thoughts.
