Hi! I am a newer avid coin collector and I came across some counterstamped pennies the other day that feature 9/11 and the twin towers. Every since then I have been researching counterstamped pennies and am trying to find anyone who has any they would sell to me or trade! I know their not worth a lot but I like them...a lot. The 9/11 one is the only one I have so any others out there I would love to have :) And I know about the State ones that were done in the 70's. Thanks for looking everyone!

Really? That's cool, most people that collect coins say they are a disgrace because they are altered but I think their interesting. The 9/11 one I found on ebay dirt cheap but I can't seem to find a lot more different types

Long ago counter-stamping was used to establish that a certain coin was tested and determined "okay" by a merchant.

Counter-stamping a modern cent is meaningless. It is simply damage to the penny...but something that might help a merchant...an advertising gimmick.

Collect what you enjoy. Just don't expect a following or profit from this.

You can probably find them on ebay. I only like them when they're cool like this one.

You can find counterstamped coins in circulation - I have several dozen cents with Kennedy, the Bicentennial, Masonic symbols, state outlines and initials etc. The other day I even found one stamped "Made in China". The Masonic Pennies are a more recent creation - they used to strike larger half dollar sized pennies that Masons kept as souvenirs. Later on they started counterstamping circulating cents - they are supposed to be a kept pocket piece but obviously they get spent by accident or design.

I'd think about it at $30, it's a VERY unique coin.
