    Large date.

You can tell by the top of the 7 and hoop of the 9. If it's even with the top of the 9, and the hoop of the 9 points back to the 7, it's a small date.

If the top of the 7 sets below the top of the 9, and the hoop of the 9 points to the mint mark, it's a large date.

    ^ what he said.

This below would be a small date - see how the top of the 7 is in line with the 0, and the bottom does not go below it?

BTW, these are the same coin, amazing what different lighting does to the pics...

ahhh. i see it how. i guess i need to look at the 7 and 0 instead of trying to line up the 9 and 7
and i can also see the hoop placement as well. thanks for the extra pics

    thanks all

after a roll of them, i can say the 9 is the easiest way to tell. at least for myself. the "level" 7 can be deceiving if you are not looking at it with a loupe and with the date dead level. but that 9 always points to the east.

I agree, I think it is easier to tell large date and small date from the loop of the nine. The coin you posted is large date. As you can see, the end of the loop of the nine points to the mintmark. In the small date, the loop of the nine swirls around and points to the seven. I didn't notice before thought about in the small date the 7 doesn't go below the zero like in the large date.

How about this one? It looks like a small to me.

From those pics it looks like it might be, bu it is very hard to tell so I can't say for sure.

In picture #2 it looks like the curl of the 9 points to the bottom of the 7, but its hard to tell if the 7 is in line with the 0.
Also look at the word LIBERTY, there should be some weakness in it if it is a small date.

Is there any way you can get better pictures? Or even scan the coin?

Looks like one to me as well. 7 lines up with the 0, curve in the 9 points to the 7. Also another factor is the weak strike on the l and y in "liberty".

    That is a small date.

Thanks all. How distracting is that Northeast field?
